About the adventure

You're enjoying an evening at Small’s Paradise, a popular Speakeasy in Harlem. Trumpets and Jazz are the theme of the night, till everyone screams and runs for the doors. And with that you find yourself inexplicably in the middle of a strange murder mystery, that brings mystic happenings and gangsters together. If you’re really lucky you’ll meet Satchmo. The setting is in the middle of the racial tensions of 1920’s New York, which is handled respectfully. You’ll follow the clues to find out what has causing these strange events. There are a range of pre-made investigators for you to choose from. • We'll be playing within 20minutes • This game is designed for players, who've had a little experience with Call of Cthulhu. • We'll have a quick chat about what sort of character you'd like to play and I'll advice on good choices from the pre-made characters.

About me

Hey, I'm Japes (jay-ps), your Game Master and the person responsible for bringing the game together. I've been running games for long enough to know that the best moments are never the ones you plan. They're the critical fumble at the worst possible time, the ridiculous idea that somehow works, the NPC everyone decides to adopt. I'm here for all of it. My games are built around the choices you make. The world reacts to those and you’ll see the story evolve. This means that no two sessions ever go quite the same way. I love roleplay, both as a player and GM, along with us all having a laugh during the game. At the heart of it, I feel it's the escapism of these fantasy adventures that we're all here for and I enjoy being it all together and make your adventure the centre of it. Something else that is I find very rewarding is guiding a new player until they find their feet and surprise themselves as what they can do. I endeavour to make every table a safe, creative space and part of that is for us all to be courteous to everyone at the table. Whether you're playing a 1920s FBI agent hunting Cthulhu Mythos monsters, a piece of Sapient Pearwood in Discworld, or a Fairy Barbarian growling at enemies as you fly over the wizard's head in D&D. Its great to see you, play them like you mean them. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Character creation

Creating your character

• As this is a short adventure we'll be using pre-made characters. • They'll be available to choose on Discord • Your characters backstory is open for you to flesh out as you'd like and do role-play that in game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Make sure you have: • A reliable PC, with a Chrome browser and internet connection • A working gaming headset or microphone and headphones (helps with music feedback) • Free accounts for: Discord and ForgeVTT (hosts FoundryVTT). Links provided after joining • I'll be 'on camera' and ask everyone to do likewise, it makes for a friendlier game

What Japes brings to the table

• I’ll bring some voices to the table as I role play the NPCs and love it when players do to. It doesn't need to be of a ‘voice actor’ quality. • Colour maps and many of the great features of FoundryVTT will be in use • Background music (that is controllable by you so can be turned off if you prefer) and more icy music for those mountains. • Storytelling that will bring the narrative suspense to the table • A sprinkle of dry humour that adds a unique flavour

Safety

How Japes creates a safe table

• I provide a fun gaming environment filled with unexpected twists and turns, that will keep you guessing as to where things go next. To do this well, safety is a priority. • We'll use the "Deck of Player Safety" which uses private responses for "hard no" topics in the game • As this is a horror style adventure, do check the Content Warnings as they will (at least once) form part of this game. • I embrace inclusivity for all players at the table. Although this adventure is set in the 1920s, the ism’s of the era are left at the door. Should it arise I'll deal with it quickly. • We’ll have a break for 5 to 10 mins half way through the session. Time to top up drinks and snacks.
