About the adventure
In "Monster of the Week", you each create a character that represents a monster or supernatural show archetype. These characters then delve into mysteries with some supernatural entity at the core of it. It's your job to make things right again and get out alive! I always run my games with some humor, so leaning into the "Buffy" style of game. But make no mistake, this game is deadly and hunters can perish. I also will have all the book mysteries but, depending on the group's interest level, can write original campaign-style integrated mysteries. All you need is a love of mysteries and monsters and you'll be set!

About me
I've always enjoyed the rise and fall, the highs and lows, the victories and defeats, in stories. As a reader and writer as far back as I can remember, I fell into a world and went on an adventure with those characters and then inevitably, a new world would come along and I'd go follow them... Later in life, I became an improviser. The spontaneity of both the creator and the audience to create a similar story was always a thrill. TTRPGs, for me, feel very similar. Whether as player or GM, we are telling an improvised story together. We are creating it as we go and who knows what'll happen! It, for me, is a pure exercise in storytelling. Let's create a story together!

Creating your character
This game in particular calls for a lot of character creation as a group during our Session 0. That said, I also always advise players to think about what types of characters they want to play - and we can translate into the game's playbooks. Do you want to be a hacker? The comic relief? A person on a mission from some strange entity? All these are excellent starting points as we make our characters together. I'll also likely ask for each player to tell me some things they like about this genre. Would you love to see mermaids? Or a zombie that can talk calmly? Anything like that is fodder for our mysteries that I'll try to include!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
We will use Roll20 and Zoom. I can make us a Discord channel if the players want.
What Chris McGowan brings to the table
I will bring decades of improv experience plus over 5 years of running "Monster of the Week", including an actual play podcast. Combat is intense but also not tactical. The credo of this game is not IF you figure things out, but how. And if you survive the encounters! Fighting is rare but deadly! As I say in all my games, you have to love the fail as much as the success. One of the things I love about Monster of the Week is that you gain experience when you fail rolls - we learn from our mistakes. I will bring comedy throughout to help balance the intense moments, sometimes scary, sometimes weird, and we may lose a hunter or two. But I promise we'll create some cool stories and cool moments together.
