High school is already hard enough. But for you, who fight supernatural entities that feed on human emotion, it definitely gets complicated.

About the adventure

You're students at an ordinary high school. At least, that’s how it looks on the surface. But you are anything but ordinary. You have the power to wield The Weird—supernatural anomalies that bend reality itself. Your job? Hunting down the out-of-control anomalies that feed on human emotion. Most people chalk them up to ghosts, aliens, or unexplained phenomena. But you know the truth. You know them as The Twisted. Your club adviser has summoned you to the clubroom. Probably another assignment. A weird one. The Fool’s Mate is a one-shot for Fabula Ultima heavily inspired by the Persona JRPG series. The session will include investigative roleplaying as well as fighting human fears made real.

About me

How do you make someone forget every single detail of their life? Ask them to talk about themself. I am Sunshine, a non-binary GM from the US. I have been playing TTRGPs for over ten years and GMed on and off most of that time.In addition to TTRPGs, I have been writing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. I have one degree in creative writing and one degree in playwrighting and dramaturgy (basically, I'm the loremaster, question asker, and conflict resolver of a show). I love reading TTRPG books and have a decent knack for memorizing rules (thank you AuDHD!). The systems that I have played are: - Alice is Missing - Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 & 5E - Fabula Ultima - Lasers & Feelings - Monster of the Week - Palladium - Pathfinder 1E & 2E - Phoenix: Dawn Command - Sentinel Comics: The Roleplaying Game

Character creation

Creating your character

As this is a one-shot, I have prepared several characters and will send you the list once you sign up. You are more than welcome to create your own level 5 character, or even tweak the pre-made characters, but if I don’t get the character information at least 24 hours before session, you must play a pre-made character. If you make your own character, you can use any of the three Fantasy Atlases, as well as the Playtest Variant material for character creation. I am more than happy to work with you on creating the character, whether it is through messages or if we can find time to chat. Additionally, as this is heavily inspired by the Persona series, there is a specific class your character will need to have at least one level in.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account for voice chat and I will send you the link to my Discord server when you sign up. Foundry VTT is used for the game mechanics, but you don't need an account to use it.

What Sunshine brings to the table

I have a Foundry VTT account that will provide tokens, maps, and music. The system also easily automates the system so it is easier to learn. The one-shot is a balance of roleplay and tactical combat. As it is pre-made there are creatures and story beats already written, but I will adjust the game to better suit the characters that my players bring. This game is welcome for people who haven't played Fabula Ultima. I have a strong grasp of the system and have experience teaching new systems to people.

Homebrew rules

- Playtest Variant - While there are a fair bit of rules in the document, here are the highlights: - Initiative isn’t rolled; if a Villain isn’t present the PCs act first and if a Villain is present, the NPCs act first. - Changes made to multiple Core Rulebook class skills. - A major overhaul of the Arcanist (Summoner) class; this is important as I am requiring every character to have at least one level in this class. - Zone Combat - Combat has three distinct zones; Front, Back, and Flying. Characters can only use melee skills while in the Front zone and can only target enemies in the opposing Front zone (with some exceptions). If at any point there is no one in the Front zone, all characters in the Back zone move to the Front. - Environmental Elements - During each combat, I will provide a list of about five objects in the area. During a player’s turn, they can use a single Environmental Element for their action; describe how the object is used for the action and you will get a +1 bonus to your roll. Each Environmental Element can only be used once for the bonus, but you are free to still use them for flavor.

Safety

How Sunshine creates a safe table

As this is a one-shot there won’t be a session 0. However upon signing up I will send you an RPG Consent Checklist. Please fill that out ASAP, and at the beginning of the session I will take some time going over the group’s boundaries. I also use X, N, and O cards. If you are uncomfortable, you can say “X card” and the topic of conversation will stop immediately. Using the N card will let us know that the current topic could wander into X card territory, and the O card is used when I check in and you are comfortable. I also am a big fan of the Stars and Wishes system. Though as this is a one-shot, we will only be handing out Stars at the end of the session. Finally my table is a space where anyone is welcome. Any form of bigotry will not be tolerated.
