About the adventure

Hell's Harbor has long stood as a sanctuary for pirates and lowlifes. An island ruled by pirates, for pirates. None were more feared and hated than Bilgewater Annie, a powerful sea hag who ruled the waters with an iron grip. Hell's Harbor was certainly no paradise under her, but it was as stable as an island of violent criminals could hope to be. Now that she's gone, the biggest names on the sea are meeting at the Crusty Barrel, to determine who will take her place. You're no legendary captain, but for whatever reason you're lucky (or unlucky) enough to to be in the room when it happens. Will you work to support your favorite candidate, cut down would-be tyrants, or are you mad enough to throw your own hat into the ring?

About me

I'm an actor, writer, and comedian who loves to bring stories to life and collaborate with other creative people. I've been roleplaying and GM-ing for over 10 years. I started playing Pathfinder with my improv, but I've grown to prefer the streamlined ease of D&D 5th edition so that my players and I can focus on the story unfolding rather than math and mechanical crunch. Most of my players in my home games are Dungeon Masters themselves (several of whom are professionals themselves) but I'm also comfortable introducing new players to the game and helping them learn the ropes. I'm funny, creative, and tactical in my approach to every game. Ever since I was a kid, I've always had a desire to create new games for my friends to play and storied worlds to lose myself in, but I never had the perfect outlet for that drive before I discovered the world of ttrpgs.

Character creation

Creating your character

Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest dice 6 times in the Roll20 server to generate your stats or use standard point buy if you are unsatisfied with your results. Tasha's Cauldron Rules for character creation are permitted. You will be playing level 6 characters who are either active pirates or citizens of Hell's Harbor. You might be the ambitious captain of a small crew, the trusted 1st mate of a legend, a retired veteran of the seas, or even an employee of the Crusty Barrel looking to make sure the next ruler of Hell's Harbor isn't as bad as the last one. If you have any further questions as to how to set up your character or if you're looking for additional plot hooks to help you feel more grounded, please feel free to reach out to me.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to join my discord and roll20 servers for the game.

What Ben brings to the table

I like to use character voices and background music to bring a cinematic tone to the games I run. While I typically stick to the Rules as Written, I'm absolutely willing to roll with the Rule of Cool when I think it would be more fun. I tend to run tactical combat encounters that encourage players to think about their environments creatively and do more than stand still while hitting a stat block with a stick.

Homebrew rules

Potions can be consumed as a bonus action, but if they still use their action to do it, they may gain a more potent version of the effect.

Safety

How Ben creates a safe table

A link to the Lines and Veils document will be posted on the games Discord Server. Because this is a one-shot, we will not be using a session 0. I also like to check in with my players before each game has ended to make sure that everyone is feeling comfortable, has appropriate expectations, and ready to a good time so that I can make adjustments if the answer is anything other than an enthusiastic excitement. We will be playing using discord's group call feature, so while audio is required appearing on camera is entirely optional.
