About the adventure
Your world is dying. Something has fallen from the sky, and whatever it is, it's spreading. The only answers lie somewhere out in the dark — and the only way to find them is to leave everything behind and fly. Light of Xaryxis is a Spelljammer campaign that takes you from a world under siege into the vast, dangerous expanse of Wildspace and beyond. Think Star Wars filtered through high fantasy. Crumbling empires, desperate alliances, ancient power struggles, and characters you'll still be talking about months later. The adventure spans twelve sessions across four acts, with each part raising the stakes and reshaping what you thought you knew. This is a combat-heavy game with roleplay woven throughout. Expect ship battles, boarding actions and creatures that want you dead. But also tense negotiations, fractious allies, and moments where what you say matters as much as what you roll. It's high octane from start to finish. We play on Discord with Owlbear Rodeo for maps and visuals. Sessions run 3 to 3.5 hours. Characters start at 5th level and advance to 9th through milestone progression. Some TTRPG experience is helpful at this level, but you don't need to know Spelljammer at all — if the setting is new to you, that's half the fun.

About me
I’m a seasoned GM with a passion for creating immersive, story-driven worlds where player choices truly matter. I’ve recently started running RuneQuest, weaving mythic, dangerous, and deeply detailed settings where characters live within a world that feels alive and responsive. I focus on the interplay of lore, culture, and personal stakes, making each session feel like a living story. I’m also highly experienced with D&D 5e, bringing cinematic adventure, strategic encounters, and rich roleplay opportunities to every table. Beyond that, I’ve run numerous campaigns in Starfinder 1e and the Alien RPG, blending sci-fi tension with player-driven narrative and intricate worldbuilding. Recently, I’ve branched into Call of Cthulhu, exploring horror, mystery, and the creeping dread of the unknown. Perfect for players who want high-stakes, atmospheric games. My tables thrive on collaboration, curiosity, and engagement. I love it when players surprise me with clever solutions, take bold risks, or fully embody their characters. I craft long-term arcs with meaningful consequences, but I also make space for moment-to-moment fun, creativity, and improvisation. Each session is a mix of tension, exploration, and cinematic storytelling, where every choice can ripple through the world. I run worlds for players who want epic myths, strategic challenges, and narrative depth, but I also make sure there’s always room for humour, camaraderie, and moments of pure joy. My ideal table is one where everyone’s invested, curious, and ready to dive fully into their characters, while respecting the story, the world, and each other. Whether you’re a new player looking to explore a rich world for the first time, or a veteran seeking complex narratives and meaningful choices, I can craft a table that fits your style. I love blending myth, tension, and cinematic adventure, and I aim to make every session memorable, interactive, and fun.

Creating your character
Characters come to the table ready to play. Before our Session 0, you'll create your character at 5th level using the 2024 D&D rules (5.5e). However you like to build, whether that's D&D Beyond, a PDF, or a physical sheet. Just make sure I have a copy before our first session. Session 0 is a free, up to two-hour meeting where we'll introduce ourselves and your characters, sort out party balance, and make sure everyone is set up for a good time before the campaign begins. It's also your chance to ask questions and tweak anything before we're locked in. One honest piece of advice: spellcasting goes a long way in this setting. Wildspace throws a lot at you, and magic opens doors that martial builds sometimes can't. You can absolutely play a non-caster, but come in knowing the campaign will test you in ways that reward versatility. I'll never turn anyone away for their character choice, but I'd rather tell you now than have you find out mid-session. Stats, species, class, and background are your choice within the 2024 core rules. If you're unsure what's available or want to check something before Session 0, just ask.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Discord - Download Discord and create an account if you don't have one. I'll send you a personal invite link to the campaign server once you're booked. This is where we'll communicate, share session updates, and play. Owlbear Rodeo - No download needed, it runs in your browser. Just make sure you can access it at owlbear.rodeo before session one so there are no surprises on game night. A working microphone - Clear audio is essential. A headset is ideal but any mic will do as long as your fellow players can hear you without interference. A webcam - I ask that everyone has a webcam on during sessions. This is a roleplay-heavy adventure and being able to see each other genuinely elevates the experience for the whole table. If you have concerns about this, feel free to message me before booking and we can have a chat. That's it! No paid software, no complex setup. If you run into any technical issues before session one, reach out and we'll sort it out.
What Mal brings to the table
My goal at the table is simple: every session should feel like an episode of something you can't stop watching. I build games around story, character, and consequence where the world reacts to what you do, the NPCs have real motivations, and no decision is without weight. I try to use distinct voices and personalities for every major NPC, from grizzled mercenary commanders to alien warlords to the kind of villains you'll love to hate. Ambient music and sound effects run throughout every session. Battle themes, eerie Wildspace atmospherics, tense negotiation underscore, to keep you locked in from the first minute to the last. Combat in this campaign is frequent, intense, and cinematic. Encounters are designed to challenge your tactics and your nerve, from ship-to-ship broadside exchanges to desperate boarding actions to things that go wrong in interesting ways. I embrace the Rule of Cool. If it's bold, creative, and dramatic, I want to find a way to make it work - while keeping Rules as Written in my back pocket where fairness and consistency matter. Players at this table can expect: A living world that responds to your choices, with consequences that carry across the whole campaign. Distinct, memorable NPCs with their own agendas — allies, rivals, and everything in between. Cinematic combat built for tension and drama, not just damage output. Ambient music woven into every session. Support for newer players on rules and mechanics without slowing the table down. Moments of genuine surprise — this adventure earns its cliffhangers.

Safety
How Mal creates a safe table
Player safety and comfort are a top priority at my table. I want everyone to feel secure, respected, and free to explore the story without fear of discomfort or judgment. To achieve this, I use multiple tools and practices both before and during sessions. Before the first game, I provide access to the Monte Cooke consent form, which lets players identify topics, themes, or content they are uncomfortable with, as well as their preferences for in-game content. This allows me to tailor scenes and encounters to ensure everyone can enjoy the story without encountering unwanted material. During Session Zero, we discuss boundaries, table expectations, and any “No-Go” topics openly. If there’s something a player would like to communicate privately, that’s always welcome. I’ll never shame or pressure anyone. Session Zero is also the place to clarify tone, pacing, and expectations for roleplay and combat, making sure everyone is on the same page. I also incorporate Lines and Veils where appropriate, either via the consent form or discussion, so players can set limits on what happens on-screen or what is only implied. This ensures sensitive or potentially triggering content is handled safely and respectfully. After sessions, I'm happy to host aftercare check-ins for any players who want to discuss content or decompress. This can be done via chat, voice, or a quick private message. Whatever feels most comfortable for the player. In short, my table is a judgment-free zone where fun, immersion, and safety go hand in hand. My goal is to create a space where players feel free to explore their characters, engage with the story, and enjoy the game without fear or discomfort. Respect, communication, and consent are always at the forefront.
