About the adventure

After the shocking death of a beloved politician, the city of Baldur's Gate teeters on the brink of chaos. Newly arrived to the city, your band of adventurers happened to be in the right place at the right time... and now, it may just rest with you to save the city. As three figures compete for power over Baldur's Gate, you must decide who to trust, who to assist, and how to make sure that the rising tide of chaos and violence is stopped... one way or another. Immerse yourselves in the politics of Baldur's Gate and grapple with difficult challenges and competing priorities in a chaotic city troubled by class difference, indifferent leaders, and a mysterious threat. New to D&D? I'm very happy to teach you! This is story that will depend more on character choices and roleplay than on deep tactics, so it's great for beginners. Murder in Baldur's Gate is an Adventurer's League module from when 5e was still being playtested, which I have now updated for the current rulesets. We can choose to play with either 2014 or 2024 rules at party's preference (but do let me know if there's one you absolutely don't want).

About me

I’ve been a storyteller across mediums, including as a playwright, actor, and novelist-- plus a drama critic and a literary scholar, breaking down stories and figuring out how and why they work the way they do. Over time, this came to feel like an accidentally perfect GMing education. I started playing TTRPGS with D&D, like most people, but was fortunate enough to fall into a local group where I had the opportunity to be introduced to a range of different systems that helped me realise how many amazing possibilities there are out there for collaborative storytelling through games.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will do some collaborative character creation and discussion in the first session, but feel free to start thinking of and discussing concepts once you've joined the Discord server and had a chance to look at the lore doc! You will begin as Level 3 characters, with the source books TBD depending on which ruleset we use. Point Buy or Standard Array.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to join a Discord server, and remain a member for the duration of the campaign. This is what we will use for voice and video. You will need a microphone, headphones, and ideally a camera. You will also need to sign up for an account on Demiplane to access the character builder and character sheets.

What Hailey brings to the table

I will provide access to source books as needed on D&D Beyond. I will also provide battle maps, NPC art, and background music. This adventure will largely be focused on roleplay and intrigue, and I will bring to life a range of colourful NPCs and antagonists with help from over 20 years of acting experience. There will be combat opportunities as well, but violence in a big city rarely goes unnoticed! For the sake of fairness, I largely stick to Rules as Written, but I always want to enable a shenanigan or reward great roleplay.

Homebrew rules

Homebrew rules will be clarified once we decide upon a ruleset.

Safety

How Hailey creates a safe table

A Lines and Veils document will be created before the first session, and we will cover it and any other concerns in session 0, where we will also create our characters collaboratively, so everyone can ensure they are comfortable with what other players are bringing to the table. In play, we will use the script change system, which you can read about here: https://briebeau.com/thoughty/script-change/ We will go over all of these tools at the beginning of play, and also take time to establish any other boundaries. All content warnings listed below except for murder, violence, and classism are negotiable! Those ones are pretty baked into the story. After the game, we will use Stars and Wishes as a way to reflect on the game and raise any concerns.
