About the adventure

The world is ancient, but magic is new. The Pantheon is incomplete. Many of the best-known spells have not been discovered or invented. Some forms of undeath have yet to be discovered... No one has lived on the planet Aerth for centuries. Nor has anyone even been able to visit. Those who try are never heard from again. Instead, in the sky above Aerth are countless cylinders that house the peoples of today. Space colonies built by a long-dead civilization. These are the new cradles of civilization, where you are from, but the most interesting things happen the moon. The truly adventurous find ways of leaving their homes and traveling to the lunar surface, where multiple cultures interact with each other, some for the first time in hundreds of years, some for the first time ever. I created the setting for this tale myself, with an eye towards collaborative storytelling. You have a large amount of control in writing your own backstory. You want to be a disgraced former princess from a magical kingdom? Now there's a magical kingdom missing its heir apparent out there. You want to make a religious character? You can help decide some of what gods are even in the setting. You want to play a pure power fantasy? You might end up becoming a god in the setting! The story has a number of branches and pathways that open or close based on character choice. As DM, I'll respond in more or less real time to what I perceive to be what each player and the party as a whole is most interested in. The theme is constant, however. The theme of this campaign is Power: who has it? who needs it? who deserves it? who doesn't? what will people do for it, and are their reasons justified?

About me

I’ve been DMing for about 5 years now. I enjoy high-power campaigns, with lots of magic items. My favorite settings are Eberron and Exandria, and I own most of Wizards’ published campaigns.

Character creation

Creating your character

The bulk of character creation can be done in session 0, which will be free. I ask that each player come to the table with 3 character concepts. These concepts can be anything from a build, to a 30-page backstory, to a silly voice, to a life philosophy. We'll take these concepts and develop which best gel together (including which have the best potential for drama), and in the setting and story as a whole (it's no fun playing an anime character in a CW show, don't ask me how I know). I prefer standard array for stat generation, but that's not a hard rule. I do not ban any class, subclass, lineage, or source. However, some spells might be unavailable or limited for lore reasons. Starting level is 3, with the possibility of backstory prequels or flashbacks at lower levels.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please make sure to have your 3 character concepts ready for session 0. If my homebrew rules are desired, I can make the google drive available, and it includes a pdf character sheet that I like to use. I will send out links to DnD Beyond and Discord once we have a “full table.” Any further questions, feel free to ask! Let's Play soon!

What Chris Walz brings to the table

I have an extensive DnD Beyond Library and am proficient with the Maps tool, which I use as the VTT for this game. I also have a google drive with optional rules alterations, including additional playable classes (some of which I homebrewed myself) if that is something that the party decides together that they are interested in. My DMing style has been described as very story-forward and player permissive. I enjoy using character backstory information in a number of ways. I play with a variety of character voices and vocal styles, though I've been known to forget who I gave what voice to from time to time. I don't use ambient music or sound effects, as I haven't found a way of incorporating them that I like yet.

Homebrew rules

If desired, I have a folder of hombrew rules that I like to use that can be made available to all players. This is something we’d discuss during our free session 0.

Safety

How Chris Walz creates a safe table

I'm very sensitive to my players' personal lines and veils. I don't have a dedicated document, as I prefer players to send such information to me in private messages. I've never had this cause problems with one player broaching another's lines or veils unknowingly, but I do have infrastructure in place to address that situation if it should come up. I'm also always available to communicate, so please feel free to ask if you have any questions.
