About the adventure

Have you always wanted to play D&D? Do you want to join an in-person game but don't want to come in knowing nothing? Come join some fellow Newbs (we love you and it's fun to learn together) and explore the city of Phlan, where... something is definitely wrong, but no one wants to talk about the dragon in the room. Looking for: - Anyone who's D&D curious - Anyone seeking a safe space to learn - Anyone who's up for laughing as you play - Anyone who wants to say what up to a dragon from a safe distance In this module I'll use several short adventures written for the official D&D "adventuring league" and modified by me for fun / playability. We'll begin with character creation and D&D 101 in a session 0, our very first meeting. Then we can dive into adventure! This will be a relatively short campaign so you're not committing to this setting or character forever. (Although we can continue it if we want to - it leads into a book! sortof) You'll fight bandits, learn about AC and HP and alllll the dice, argue with goblins, buy some nifty gear, explore dungeons, and maybe even wave at a dragon. By the end, you'll have a sense of what you like about the "core" D&D setting of the Forgotten Realms with its vaguely medieval architecture and technology, what types of adventures you enjoy, and what to look for next in a game!

About me

Telling stories since I was a kid with a tape recorder in my mom's closet (good acoustics). I like to learn systems and help people actually have fun with the game they are playing! And maps. I LOVE MAPS. If you want someone who's as invested in telling a good story as getting rules right and who leans to humor instead of horror, I'm your middle-aged nerd.

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll create characters together in session 0 (our first meeting). Bring some fun ideas, but also listen to everyone else's. This is a game where the party balance can change how combat encounters go - if everyone does magic but your enemy is immune, who will hit it really hard? So we'll consider party balance, as well as what feels fun. A few notes: - Characters will start at level 1 - We will go up a level after each module

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Needed: - free Roll20 player account - free Discord account - connection to reliable internet - Webcam/Mic There's no prep needed, although I do recommend watching a little actual play if you are interested in learning more about D&D. My advice for newcomers is the "Dungeons and Drag Queens" series on Dropout.tv as they are also new to the game that first season! Otherwise, just patience with your fellow players, an open mind, and all your pent-up creativity. Roll20 even does the math for you. :)

What Nancy brings to the table

I will run this game on Roll20 and ask that everyone sign up there for a free account. I have many of the books purchased through their system as well, so lots of subclasses and options are available to my games. I also think discord is a great place to discuss the game, check in about scheduling, and bring up any questions or concerns, so would ask that folks be willing to join a discord server. Especially when it comes to beginners, I embrace the intention and do not punish players for trying cool things or not understanding certain rules or nuances. I might explain if it doesn't kill the flow of the game, or I'll flag it for later and let folks know how it "normally" would go. The goal is to tell a fun fantasy story together - if we all agree on that, we'll be on the same page.

Safety

How Nancy creates a safe table

Safety is really important in D&D and especially for beginning players. We'll talk about it in session 0 (our first meeting) and create a lines and veils document that I'll share with everyone. I am reachable at any point on discord or this site, and my goal is that the whole group is having fun! That means you too - so if something is getting too close to a line for comfort, we'll adjust and redirect.
