About the adventure
You have arrived in the rustic frontier town of Phandalin, nestled in the foothills of the Sword Mountains southeast of the great city of Neverwinter. You find a small board nailed to a post in the town square, and you begin to read the handwritten notices displayed there. You choose a quest from among these notices and imagine the danger, treasure, and intrigue that await you as you begin your adventuring career! Welcome to “The Lvl5 Express”, where we will adapt the official published adventure "Dragon of Icespire Peak" into a 5-session mini-series. Campaign parties often don’t survive beyond a few sessions, let's acknowledge that from the beginning and use it as a strength! The objective is to learn and practice 2024 5e, and to test drive classes and subclasses. We’ll keep our eyes on the prize and get our reps in. - 5 quests and 5 levels in 5 weeks, hang on tight because this train doesn’t stop!! - One job board quest per session. At the end of each session, the party will choose their next job from the board. - Gain a level after each session. Try a class, test drive a subclass, and choose a lvl4 ASI, in just 5 sessions. - We'll use time efficiently, focus on the quests, and always use the full 4 hours. - Zero prior knowledge required. We'll cover basics and encourage questions. (OK listen I mean if there's overwhelming consensus from the group, we can modify the progression and do like Lvl1/2/3/3/4, or Lvl2/3/3/4/4 or whatever, but this is still a limited engagement. If a committed, high-attendance party wants more after 5, we can spin off a real campaign.)

About me
I started my D&D journey when the 2024 books came out and I haven't looked back. Life is a busy place but I always keep a few hours a week listed here on StartPlaying because helping new players always brightens my week! I dream of someday DMing a weekly game of dedicated, like-minded players.

Creating your character
I want you to try different classes and create whatever character you want instead of worrying about optimizing a party. If we end up with four monks or four wizards, I'm here for it and I'll make it work. Requirements: - Build a character on DnDBeyond. - Lvl1 - 5.5e Core Rules only - Ability scores: Standard Array only - You must select an alignment. We won’t have a lot of time for “roleplay for roleplay’s sake”, but we’ll still adhere to "What Would Your Character Do". - Aside from basic "physical characteristics", don’t worry about developing the rest of your background much. - On "Home" page of the character builder, set Character Privacy setting to “Campaign Only” or “Public”. - Make all choices until there are no blue exclamation marks anywhere. If you're a caster don't forget to pick your spells from the second tab in "1. Class". - Don't forget to add starting equipment and equip weapons and armor. I will gladly do a paid "Character Building 101" pre-session to help you build a character using DnDBeyond and break down the pros and cons of your choices.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
1) Make a free Discord account if you don’t have one. You will use this to talk to me and the other players. 2) Make a free DnDBeyond account (you already have one because that’s where you made your character.) You’ll need it to join the campaign and use their Maps Virtual Tabletop (VTT), this is where we see shared maps and roll virtual dice together. 3) Read the rules. Even without the account you just made, the Basic Rules are still free! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
What Logan brings to the table
We may be on the Express, but I’m still a full-service DM. I will endeavor to provide a "normal" game experience even though we’re keeping it movin’: - Official D&D map content in the VTT - Imagery of places, monsters, or items in the VTT - Shared ambient music through a KenkuFM Discord bot - I’ll do NPC voices to the best of my ability - I will keep us on target and on schedule. - I will nudge you to clearly declare what your character is doing. (“I open the door”) - I will offer some gentle narrative guidance without taking away your agency. Do what you want, I might ask “do you really do that?", but no do-overs allowed.
Homebrew rules
Not really homebrew in the traditional sense, but a few table rules that aren’t necessarily in the PHB: “4 PC Rule” We will play every session with 4 characters even if we’re missing some players. Missing players’ characters will be at the tavern and the attending characters will be joined by a crack team of cliche DMPCs. They don't participate in decision making and will stay out of the spotlight. They're just here to hold the other end of the rope and help you stay alive. "Class/Subclass Test Drive" - You're encouraged to change your mind. If you want to try a different class or subclass next session, let's just do it and I'll come up with a fun way for it to make narrative sense. "Target Practice" - in addition to the published quests, we can also visit a powerful illusionist-for-hire who magically creates a safe, controlled environment for simulated combat encounters.

How Logan creates a safe table
I'll ask for your lines and veils at the start of our session. Being a basic starter module, the themes are pretty mild.
