About the adventure
Across the Astral Sea drifts the shattered citadel of a fallen empire, a kingdom that once sought to chain divinity itself. At its heart burns the Black Star — a collapsed god-mind whispering promises of vengeance, absolution, and the power to rewrite fate. Three powers rise in its shadow: One to wield it. One to awaken it. One to see it erased from existence. You are drawn into the ruin not as heroes, but as instruments — hired to steal what remains of a god before destiny tears open and history begins again. Black Star Gambit is a dark high fantasy campaign of cosmic ambition, fractured timelines, and terrible temptation. Power here does not corrupt through force — it offers mercy. It offers salvation. It offers the chance to undo what should never have happened. Empires fell trying to claim this star. The question is not whether you can control it. The question is what you are willing to become.

About me
Hail and well met! Allow me to bid you welcome to DragonSanctuary. I am ScaleScibe, your dedicated weaver of tales and keeper of knowledge. As a DM, I am committed to crafting immersive and captivating game worlds where players can delve into dungeons, vanquish fearsome monsters, unearth hidden treasures, and uncover epic storylines. I specialize in a mixture of roleplay and epic combat all the while creating an immersive and entertaining world and always endeavor to tailor each session to the unique interests and play styles of my players. When I am not conjuring up fantastical adventures or weaving intricate narratives, you may find me reading various books or plotting devious plot hooks for the next campaign that I have waiting in the wings.

Creating your character
Characters begin at Level 3 using Point Buy (27) or Standard Array and may use official published 5e material (no homebrew without approval). Multiclassing is allowed with narrative justification. Before the campaign begins, each player participates in a private 1:1 backstory session. This session explores your character’s past, establishes personal stakes, and directly ties you into the world’s central conflict. Completing this session grants an early level advancement and a custom, story-driven magic item or weapon unique to your character. This is a story-driven, character-focused campaign centered on temptation, destiny, and power. Each character should have a meaningful regret, ambition, or unresolved past event that could be challenged by the opportunity to alter fate. Backstories should be concise (1–2 pages maximum), and we will collaboratively weave your history into the campaign’s factions and long-term arc.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players should create an account on the Root.app server prior to Session 0 and ensure they can access the Foundry VTT instance. A working microphone and stable internet connection are required. Characters should be finalized before their private 1:1 backstory session. Familiarity with core 5e mechanics is recommended, though setting details will be introduced through play.
What ScaleScribe brings to the table
This campaign is run exclusively through Foundry VTT and the Root.app server. I provide custom maps, curated ambience, integrated character journals, evolving faction lore, and cinematic scene pacing. Each player receives a private 1:1 backstory session and a custom story-driven magic item. Long-form campaign players also receive a commemorative 3D printed character miniature as a memento of their journey.
Homebrew rules
The following rules reflect the tone, pacing, and thematic weight of my games. Mechanics are adjusted to reinforce consequence, tension, and meaningful choice — never to restrict creativity. All containers have defined volume and weight limits. Items must physically fit within their storage. Inventory management becomes a meaningful decision, and looting is no longer abstract. Casting Counterspell always requires an ability check using the caster’s spellcasting modifier. Counterspell becomes a magical duel rather than an automatic shutdown, emphasizing tension between rival spellcasters. Death saving throws are rolled privately by the Dungeon Master to restore urgency and uncertainty in critical moments. Dropping to 0 HP is dangerous and unpredictable. Downtime provides mechanical benefits, not just narrative flavor. Training may grant minor bonuses or proficiency upgrades. Building contacts can result in favors, information, or safehouses. Rumor networks may grant small bonuses to Intelligence-based checks. Faction missions generate political or logistical leverage. Downtime represents real progress. Resurrection magic carries narrative weight. Reincarnate uses an expanded table that may include rare lineages, altered traits, and lasting story consequences. Returning from death is transformative, not transactional. Story-driven magic items may evolve over time in response to character decisions, moral compromises, or significant milestones. Rules exist to serve story, consequence, and immersion.

How ScaleScribe creates a safe table
Black Star Gambit explores darker high fantasy themes including corruption, divine imprisonment, moral compromise, political tension, and the weight of consequence. While the tone is intense and emotionally grounded, player comfort and agency remain the highest priority. Session 0 establishes tone, boundaries, and expectations. We will collaboratively define Lines & Veils before play begins. An open-door policy is always in effect — any player may step away at any time without explanation. During play, the X, N, and O system is available and can be used discreetly. Adjustments will be made immediately and without debate. Breaks are available at any time upon request. Emotional tension belongs to the characters — never the players.
