About the adventure

You are someone who has lived quite an eventful life. Did you always make the right choices? No, not at all, but you still persisted... until you didn't. After your debatably untimely death, you did not wake up to see fiery pits nor a city in the clouds, but rather a gold palace. Your soul was taken by Piaca, the goddess of redemption, and for one reason or another she has decided to give you a chance to prove yourself worthy of the heavens. All she requires you to do is complete a few tasks for her, face your past wrongdoings, and atone for your sins. Once all her tasks are completed, she will decide if you have truly been redeemed, and send your souls to paradise... or to a place of eternal torture, depending on how you do. To put it simply, this game is meant to be a mix of fantasy and a little bit of existential dread in there. In this game you'll be playing a character who, during their life, committed some sort of crime or wrongdoing bad enough to keep them out of heaven. They may have been a committed murder, a renowned serial thief, or just a relatively good person who heartlessly betrayed someone's trust. Either way, they must now atone for their past crimes in the hopes of reaching heaven. Many of the sessions will revolve around the tasks Piaca sends the party, which will range from roleplay, to exploration, to combat depending on the preferred playstyle of the group and on the crimes of the characters. Typically, each session will specifically pertain to a crime(or facet) of a specific player's character, so that each character gets their own spotlight at least once. Once all the tasks are completed, the campaign will(most likely) end.

About me

I have over 6 years of experience GM-ing, across multiple systems. I got into the tabletop world via D&D, and since then I've honed my craft as much as a can with systems like Blades In The Dark, CAIN, Vampire: The Masquerade, and more. I tend to go for more story driven games, where other themes like combat and exploration are used to add depth. Two of the things I value most in a game is freedom and the a good player backstory, one that I can interweave into the world itself.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation should be done before the first session of the game, and preferably via D&D Beyond. I would truly appreciate knowing the characters(meaning their sheets and their backstory) before the session, to give me ample time to tie them all in, considering this is an especially character driven campaign. In terms of backstory, you can essentially be anything you want, within the realm of believability. This is a somewhat timelessly themed campaign, so you can be anything from a caveman who killed his brother to a modern day influencer with the crime of being a super spreader. The most important aspect of the backstory will, quite obviously, be the crime that they committed, seeing as the type of crime and the severity of it will be brought up. It is also important that the character themselves is at least somewhat redeemable, seeing as if they aren't... the campaign will end with the rest of the party going to heaven while that character must rot in hell(though that would make for a good story). Other than those two things, go wild! All the characters will start at level 3. Their stats will be decided by rolling 4d6, dropping the lowest, and allocating the result to whichever stat you like. They will be granted a one starting feat and one uncommon magic item of your choosing. Once character creation is done, I'll look over the sheets and backstory to make sure everything is in order.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The majority of this game will be hosted on a discord server. Aside from that, all you truly need beforehand is a D&D Beyond account, as Owlbear Rodeo does not require you to have an account.

What KEY brings to the table

Seeing as this is a play by post game, it willed be filled with carefully written details and dialogue, as well as immersive descriptions of the world around you. I pride myself on weaving the characters backstories and goals into the framework of the world, which will be more of a literal statement in this campaign considering that it will all revolve around the characters' pasts. While I usually tend to focus roleplay and character dynamics, when I do include combat(which will be present in this campaign), I go for a more tactical approach. The combats I will make you have to carefully consider your next move, considering that there is always more to do than just kill your enemies. I enjoy creativity more than anything else, and will usually reward a players creativity via inspiration and allowing something to work that generally shouldn't via Rule of Cool, though not without a check needing to be made.

Homebrew rules

You can drink a potion as a bonus action and roll the die(if applicable), or drink it/administer it as an action and receive the full effects. Instead of rolling double die for a critical hit, you will instead deal max damage and roll another set of die. Critical failures will come with adverse effects, from something as simple as having disadvantage on your next roll to taking a bit Psychic damage from trying(and catastrophically failing) to decipher a code. When you are reduced to 0 hitpoints and come back up, you will have disadvantage on your rolls for the same amount of turns you were down for. In addition, each time you go down after the first, the death save DC is increased by 1. Death in this game is a bit nonsensical, as dying while completing a task will simply get you brought back by Piaca. However, that does not mean that your characters are completely safe, as a character who is unable to be redeemed or is very quickly redeemed can and will be removed and replaced with a new character, if the event calls for it.

How KEY creates a safe table

All players will be sent a link to my own Lines and Veils document, and will be able to fill out their own to send to me. Afterwards, I'll establish what will be included in the campaign and what won't, so as to make sure that every player is comfortable. A day or two before each session I will send out a disclaimer to everyone, giving them a warning of the content that is planned to be included. Xs, Ns, and Os can be messaged to me.
