About the adventure
For over a decade and a half, the land of Aendrim has slid further and further into chaos. Seventeen years since the dragon knights betrayed the good king, slaughtering him and his dukes to the last, so says the High Lord of Aendrim. Only the barons remain to keep order, but they are divided and diminished without the authority of the crown. Left to their own devices, the lords must contend with the encroaching wilderness, bandits, and each other—for who among them would not seize their neighbor’s lands if allowed? In the midst of these troubles, the Barony of Bedegar suffers a terrible crisis: the Lord Bedegar and his entire family are found dead! Amidst the turmoil, the baron’s right hand and steward, Lord Saxton, now elevates and empowers more knights to secure the realm and its people. But security is a thin veil for tyranny, and while he seeks to crown himself regent, all manner of villains wait to carve out their own piece of the realm. And what of the good people of Bedegar? They are in need of hope, in need of heroes. Will you rise to take up this mantle? Or leave them to the whims of tyrants and monsters? Greetings adventurers! ‘The Baron of Bedegar’ is a Level 1-4 campaign for Draw Steel. The premise is based on the modules ‘The Siege of Castle Rend’ and ‘The Regent of Bedegar’, as well as Matt Colville’s campaign diaries, and a healthy mix of my own ideas for good measure. This one is meant to be a player-driven campaign where the goals and motivations of the heroes guide the story, though it assumes that the heroes will eventually need to deal with the looming threat of Lord Saxton—whose iron grip on the realm tightens as time goes on. So you can expect a sandbox presentation, especially early on, with multiple leads to track down and areas to explore. I also intend to incorporate elements of realm-building and political maneuvering as the heroes gain renown and form alliances. This adventure is intended for players of intermediate or advanced levels of experience with Draw Steel. Beginners are still welcome, but this is not a good game for first-time players. By no means are you expected to know every rule in and out, but ideally you’ve played in at least a few games, enough to be familiar with the basics.

About me
Hey everybody! You can call me Zee and I've been running TTRPGs for over a decade now. I first started playing TTRPGs back in high school when a friend invited me to play D&D 4th edition, and I immediately fell in love. 'You mean to say I can BE that ferocious beast-man with a giant sword who fights demons on Tuesdays and slays dragons on the weekends!? Sign me up!' But it didn't stop there. Before long, I got the craving to run my own game, to weave tales of villainy and heroism, to craft my own worlds, big and small, for my friends to explore and save! More than 10 years later and I've played and run games in many different systems (VtM, SW-Edge of the Empire, Starfinder, etc.), but D&D 5e has remained my bread and butter for most of that time. Lately though, I've been very excited to dive deeper into Draw Steel and Daggerheart! Last thing to mention is that I value communication and respect at my table. I work with safety tools to ensure that everyone is comfortable and has a good time. If you cannot show basic respect and kindness towards me or the other players at the table, then this is not the space for you. With all that said, I hope to see you on our next adventure!

Creating your character
You will need to create a 1st-Level hero using the Draw Steel rules. Anything in the rulebook is fair game, as well as the Summoner and Beastheart classes. The only thing I am iffy about is the inclusion of time raiders and memoneks. I have an alternative for the memonek that could use the same rules, so if you want to play a highly logical, inorganic being from another dimension, ask me about sharminds! Time raiders on the other hand… I don’t want to say it’s a hard no, but I would need to be convinced. I am happy to assist and provide resources for character creation, and we will have a Session 0 to pitch character concepts, among other things. As far as character backstories, most of the lore presented in the Draw Steel Heroes book is applicable to this campaign, especially anything on Vasloria. That said, it will differ in some places, and I’m happy to answer any questions about that. And please do not hesitate to come up with your own lore, especially when it comes to the culture or society your hero comes from. I want to collaborate with my players on this! I also encourage you to consider the non-combat elements of the Draw Steel system during character creation, like wealth and renown, as these will be useful in the realm-building and political intrigue aspects of the campaign.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will first need an account for Discord, which will be used for communication and voice call during sessions. It will also have channels with information you can look over but these are in no way required material. After you join, I will need to give you permissions to view the channels specifically for this campaign. If, after some time, you still don’t see those channels, please ‘@’ me or message me directly so I can fix that. When you sign up for this game, you will receive a message/email from StartPlaying with the Discord link and a link to a Google Form I’d like you to fill out. It includes some questions about boundaries you would like to set for topics that may come up during the campaign, but it also has questions about the implementation of some homebrew rules (more on that in the homebrew section) and which VTT we will be using. I personally would like to use the Codex VTT since it is being developed specifically for Draw Steel and has a lot of features I’m excited to test out. Of course, this will depend on the preferences of the group as a whole, which you can share through that Google Form. If we do not use the Codex, I would default to using Roll20 as it is the VTT I am the most familiar with.
What Zee brings to the table
I can provide any and all materials to help you with character creation. I can also create a custom token for your character (to be used in the VTT) if you find an image that captures what you imagine your hero looks like. Just send me the image and I will make the token. As far as my style of running the game, I typically try to provide a fairly immersive experience with in-character voices and detailed descriptions, while still keeping things light above table. I do ascribe to the rule of cool, though with Draw Steel still being a fairly new system and the different levels of experience players may have, I will be sticking to the rules as much as possible. Draw Steel is intended to be fairly tactical, but my goal here is not to overwhelm anyone, much less kill your character. I’ll also be playing ambient music and audio tracks to help immerse you into the world of the game.
Homebrew rules
For the most part, I intend to stick to the established rules of Draw Steel, though I’m open to making tweaks as the campaign goes on if we find that something doesn’t work for our group. Also, if the party shows a strong interest in realm building and political maneuvering, I would like to try adapting the rules from MCDM’s “Strongholds & Followers” and “Kingdoms & Warfare” to Draw Steel. I think those systems would mesh very well with Draw Steel’s systems for downtime and progression. Of course, this is something we will discuss as a group, and I’m perfectly happy to keep it simple if you all decide you’d rather not add on more rules.

How Zee creates a safe table
When you sign up, you will immediately receive a message/email with a link to a Google Form, which will be a checklist of Lines and Veils on topics that might pop up in this one-shot. There will also be space for you to list any of your own boundaries in case there are topics you don't want to see that I have not listed. I also plan to have a Session 0 before beginning the actual campaign. This will mainly be used to set expectations for the campaign, answer any questions, and allow you all to discuss character ideas. Lastly, I like to end sessions with a quick wrap up where we can discuss the game and you all can give me feedback. I’ve used Stars & Wishes in my other games to great effect, but we don’t have to stick to any rigid system. I’m open to any constructive criticism, and I hope to hear if there’s anything you really liked so I know what to focus on in future games.
