About the adventure

So, you have been ensnared by the Mists and transported to Ravenloft. It seems the Count sees something in you, though whether that something is promise or merely entertainment, I cannot say. His interest is the only reason you yet live, and if you are to survive, if you are to escape, then you must uncover his secrets. Much of this adventure is exploration, both of the world and of your characters. Consider Ravenloft your sandbox wherein your character can follow a path of their choosing, be that the main plotline or a personal quest. Either way, the world as I run it will always be in motion, and each action or inaction has its consequence. No pressure. Roleplay is as important as combat in this game, if not more so, and you are welcome to explore Evil alignments as well as Good, though with that, as with everything, safety rules and party communication must and shall be observed. I take a lot of inspiration from Tolkien when it comes to tone, and so the denizens of my Ravenloft are careful but hopeful. Many adventurers before you have tried and failed to best the Count, but each new party is another opportunity. Similarly, the forces against you are frightening and overwhelming - horror and suspense are very real here - but there is strength in the bonds you make among your party and among those you help. If this all sounds great to you, then odds are you'd be a great fit at my gaming table. That said, I'm selective about who ends up there. I am protective of the vibe, and I want to make sure we mesh, for the sake of our collective enjoyment. To that end, I ask that you send me a message with the following: - The kind(s) of character(s) you would like to explore. - Your comfort with dark themes, romance, and any other content you feel may warrant a discussion. NSFW content is for consenting adult players and adult characters only, and more often than not, I treat it as fade-to-black. - Any other questions you have!

About me

I'm Sawyer. Pleased to meet you. I'm a writer and voice actor who specializes in world-building and character relationships. As a player and game master, my storytelling is driven by curiosity; I both plan and improvise plot points based around questions I and/or my players want to pursue. I am inclusion- and diversity-minded in my games, and I not only welcome but want BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and neurodivergent players at my tables. I hope we can play together.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players are requested to create a Level 1 character in the D&D Beyond campaign I will provide for them upon activation of the game. Stats should be rolled manually, and players may reroll up to twice if they are dissatisfied with the results. The third array must be committed to, and I trust my players to honor the rule. I also encourage, though do not require, an array that has a negative modifier or two. Failure can be just as interesting as success, if not more. All of this can be done before or during Session 0. I encourage players to use the Players Handbook (2014) and Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft if they require additional information. If a player is unfamiliar with the process and would like help doing so, I'm happy to walk them through it.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have a Discord account, as we will make use of a voice channel to play and several text channels to organize information. A webcam is encouraged but not required. Players should also have a Roll20 account, as battle maps will be stored there. Players are welcome to use the virtual dice included in the D&D Beyond Character Sheet, though as a dice goblin myself, I won't begrudge them the use of their own.

What Sawyer brings to the table

First and foremost, I will provide links to a community Discord with dedicated channels for our game and to the D&D Beyond campaign that we will use. I will also provide the necessary content for D&D 5e's Players Handbook and Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, among others. Beyond that, I provide ambient music, character voices, unique NPCs, consequential roleplay, strategic combat, and a Rule-of-Cool approach to the game. I also make a point to be communicative about session recaps, mechanics, narratives, and lore so that each player feels equipped to and capable of tailoring their character to their best liking.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action. A cantrip and a spell may be used in the same turn, provided the spell can be cast as a bonus action.
