About the adventure

Welcome to Smoke Pine Tavern; A new player friendly short adventure. This homebrew adventure takes place outside Neverwinter where level 1 adventurers find themselves congregating at the Smoke Pine Tavern for their first quest. Level 1 characters aiming to finish at level 5. Classical DND flavor of accepting quests in civilization and then adventuring into the wilderness to slay monsters and find treasure, though the real prize as always are the friends we make along the way. Level 1 characters Wizards of the Coast Published Materials only Standard Starting Equipment Game will be balanced to the party composition and size Bring 2 daggers to the table with you, personal connections your character has in Faerun that are entirely made up by you. Though you're free to ask me if you need some guidance.

About me

I'm a story driven, rules focused, fun prioritizing, DM with over 2 decades of experience running dungeons and dragons games for friends and students. My favorite games are focused on character moments and building off of character decisions and backstories to create unique experiences whether the entire campaign is a homebrew or we started off with an adventure module but ended up somewhere else along the way. As a veteran DM, I know when to rely on the rules to make sure the table is fair for everyone while bending them when necessary to ensure we're all having a fun and memorable experience. My preferred game length is a short adventure with a singular main quest and the occasional subplot that develops based on character choices, though there's no rule saying you can't string a series of short adventures together to create one epic campaign. I use a combination of cutscenes and battlemaps on Roll20 to mix theater of the mind in roleplay heavy situations and allow 5e's grid based combat to shine once the weapons are drawn.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will begin at level 1. All Wizards of the Coast published material is legal for creating this character. The characters can be created on pen and paper beforehand but will need to be transcribed onto a roll20 character sheet by the end of session 0. Standard Starting Equipment, any rolling for starting equipment will need to take place during session 0 on roll20. Players should use the standard ability array for ability score generation.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have a familiarity with the game but experience playing isn't necessary. Players should at least have an idea of what they want to play before session 0, but a finished character is a plus not a requirements. Players should have a free account on roll20 and a mic to speak, but a webcam is NOT necessary. Borrowed character art they can send digitally if the player wishes to choose their own token art, otherwise a token will be chosen for the player by the DM with the players input during session 0.

What Gerbo Gerrik brings to the table

The DM will have the adventure pre-generated on roll20 including full color splash art, battle maps, and tokens for the NPCs and player as needed. Over two decades of DMing experience.

Safety

How Gerbo Gerrik creates a safe table

Session 0 will be included with the first session and will be a review of the Lines and Veils which will then be agreed upon by all players and saved to the game as well as a checking of characters to make sure they're game ready and introduction of players. After the game has wrapped, we'll debrief to make sure everyone is enjoying their time and cover any topics that may have come up that players are still feeling frustrated about. If at any time a player is feeling uncomfortable, which should hopefully never happen in our G-Rated game, they are welcome to leave without a word and I will check in with them after the session to debrief. They are of course welcome back whenever they feel comfortable.
