About the adventure

The frontier is wide, the law is thin, and the dead don’t always stay in their graves. **Deadlands** is a Weird West setting where six-shooters and sorcery share the same dusty streets, and every shadow might hide something unnatural. Rail barons' bargain with demons, ghost rock fuels mad science, and ordinary folks are caught between survival and the supernatural. This is a world of high stakes, hard choices, and legends in the making. This game blends action, horror, and dark humor. Expect tense showdowns, eerie mysteries, and moments where courage matters more than firepower. Your posse might hunt monsters, foil cults, protect a town from horrors, or chase fortune across a cursed frontier. The tone sits between gritty Western and pulpy supernatural thriller: dangerous, but still fun, with room for big heroics and dramatic risks. The table welcomes both new and experienced players. Rules knowledge isn’t required—just a willingness to take bold chances and play a character with strong motivations. Roleplay, teamwork, and cinematic action take center stage. If you enjoy Western themes, supernatural twists, and stories where your choices leave a mark on the world, you’ll fit right in. Saddle up, load your irons, and keep one eye on the dark. The West is stranger than it ought to be—and it’s waiting for a posse like yours.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation for Savage Worlds: Deadlands When it happens Character creation is handled before the first session when possible, with time set aside at Session Zero to finalize details, connect backstories, and answer rules questions. New players can build during Session Zero if needed. System and Starting Rank We use Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE) with the Deadlands: The Weird West setting. Characters start at Novice Rank (standard starting heroes). How stats are decided Use standard SWADE creation: * 5 Attribute points * 12 Skill points * Normal SWADE caps and costs * 1 free Edge (if Hindrances allow) per SWADE rules * Hindrances chosen per core rules for additional points * Starting funds and gear follow Deadlands guidelines Where characters are built Characters can be created in: * Foundry VTT (preferred for automation), or * Paper or PDF sheets, then imported Allowed books Allowed: * SWADE Core Rules * Deadlands: The Weird West * Deadlands Companion (case by case) Not used unless approved: * Super Powers Companion * Fantasy or Sci-Fi Companions * Third-party supplements Tone and fit Characters should fit the Weird West: drifters, lawfolk, blessed, hucksters, mad scientists, scouts, gamblers, and similar. Grim, grounded concepts work best. Extremely silly or genre-breaking concepts will be redirected. Bottom line Show up with a rough idea of your hero, and we will make sure they are posse-ready before the first gunfight.

Safety

How Shannon Russell creates a safe table

## Safety & Player Comfort ### Core Approach Player safety and comfort take priority over story or rules. The goal is a table where everyone can engage the Weird West without stress, pressure, or personal discomfort. --- ### Session Zero Coverage Session Zero includes a clear safety discussion: * Tone, themes, and expected content of the campaign * Personal limits and preferences * Clarifying what “horror” means in this game (mood vs. shock value) * How to step away or pause if needed No one is required to justify a boundary. --- ### Lines & Veils * A **Lines and Veils document** will be shared via Discord. * Players can message additions privately at any time. * Lines = content that does not appear. * Veils = content that may exist but fades to black. This document is treated as living and adjustable. --- ### Check-Ins & Aftercare * Brief check-ins after intense scenes or sessions * Open DMs for feedback or concerns * Cool-down chat after heavy sessions to decompress * Adjustments made if themes hit harder than expected --- ### Table Culture * Respectful communication is mandatory * No harassment, discrimination, or boundary-pushing * Spotlight sharing is encouraged * Anyone may step away at any time --- ### Bottom Line Expect a Weird West game with horror and tension, but never at the expense of player well-being. Clear tools, private communication, and mutual respect keep the table safe and functional.
