About the adventure

Welcome to Phandalin, a small frontier village beneath the Sword Mountains, south of Neverwinter. Farmers, miners, and hopeful settlers have come here looking for opportunity, but life on the frontier is rarely simple. Goblins have grown bold along the roads, merchants whisper of trouble, and strange rumors drift through town. What starts as a straightforward job to help a struggling settlement soon leads to something far more complicated. Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk builds on The Lost Mine of Phandelver, expanding the story into a full campaign that carries characters from local troubles to much larger dangers. Along the way, you'll explore ruined sites, venture into dark places beneath the earth, confront unusual foes, and uncover signs that something more deliberate is unfolding around Phandalin. The adventure offers room for choice, connection to the town and its people, and a steady rise in stakes as the story grows beyond the village itself.

About me

Hey, I'm Paul! I’ve been playing D&D for eight years and running games for five. My goal is to deliver immersive, player driven sessions where your choices matter and the world responds in meaningful ways. Roleplay is a big part of my games. NPCs feel like real people, and I love when a session naturally leans into character moments or unexpected detours. I encourage roleplay but never force it. Combat is fast, tactical, and dangerous. Enemies think and adapt, and the battlefield is part of the challenge. I want you to feel like your decisions matter, whether you’re in a fight or finding a creative way around one. Exploration is more than travel. I like to include puzzles, skill challenges, and unexpected moments that make the world feel alive and worth discovering. I’m always open to chatting about your playstyle or any specific ideas you have. If this sounds like the kind of game you’d enjoy, feel free to reach out, I’d love to have you at the table!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation takes place during Session 0. Everyone begins at Level 1. • Build your character on D&D Beyond with my help if needed. • Allowed sources: 2024 Player's Handbook and Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn. • Ability scores use either Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or 27 Point Buy. • Use fixed class Hit Points at Level 1. No rolling for HP. • Start with standard class and background equipment. • Encumbrance rules are used. • Multiclassing is allowed. • Backstories should be two to three sentences, and no more than two paragraphs long. We will expand on them during play. • All characters must be approved by the DM. I reserve the right to approve or decline any concept to ensure it fits the campaign. If you need help with character ideas, mechanics, or backstory, I am happy to assist!

Safety

How Paul creates a safe table

During Session 0 we will review the campaign's tone, themes, and expectations. I use the RPG Consent Form to establish boundaries before play begins, and I check in with players regularly throughout the campaign. If anything makes you uncomfortable at any point, you can message me privately and we will adjust immediately. This adventure may include fantasy violence, dark themes, moral tension, and high stakes situations. While not intended to be gratuitous, the story does explore serious danger. We will set clear limits together to ensure everyone feels safe and respected at the table. Session 0 will also cover Foundry VTT setup and character creation. Players can expect meaningful roleplay, tactical combat, and a steadily rising sense of tension as the story unfolds.
