About the adventure

For two years, the people of the Ten-Towns of Icewhite Island have found themselves in a seemingly endless winter that seems to only be getting worse. Locals speak of an angry local goddess, Auril the Frostmaiden, a being never heard of in Khorvaire for thousands of years. Only the local adventurers who have taken up the cause will have any chance to stop the winter before it consumes the world. This is a conversion of Rime of the Frost-Maiden for the Eberron Campaign Setting. While many elements remain the same, many more have been given an Eberron spin. This will be an Intermediate game that emphasizes exploration and survival gameplay as you struggle against the endless winter. You will have to struggle to find food, water, and shelter as you explore the frontier Icewhite Island without any available maps as you seek to discover its secrets and solve the mystery of how to stop the endless winter.

About me

I'm Lano, and I have been Tabletop gaming for 30 years, since the days of AD&D 2nd Edition when I was a wee lad. When not gaming, I am a screenwriter, a voice actor, and into improv comedy. Having been around the hobby that long, I have more TTRPGs on my shelf than I have actually played. My favs include Cyberpunk 2020 & RED, D&D 5e, Fate (of various kinds), and Monster of the Week. I believe games should be fair, creative, and fun for everyone. I try to communicate as clearly as possible and do my best to make sure everyone at the table is enjoying themselves. My philosophy is, "Make everyone else look good, and you look good." I am equally inclined to run adventures out of the box or custom-made, but either way, I like to add my own spin on everything. I have ADHD and a LGBTQ+ ally, so I welcome folks of all walks of life to my games and will work with any neurospicy folks for whatever their needs might be. This includes using any lines and veils set by everyone at the table. I also do my best to prevent problem PCs as early as possible and keep the game fun for everyone. I am happy to teach the game to folks unfamiliar with it, but toxic players have no place in my games.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation will be handled in Session 0 as a group. - Character sheets will use D&D Beyond and then will be transferred to Foundry. - Starting Stats are 4D6 and drop the lowest die, rerolling all if the sum of stats are below 70. Stats are rolled during the first session in front of the DM. - Starting at Level 1 with standard starting gear. WOTC published sources only. No homebrew or partnered content aside from those that were published by WOTC. That means Exandria content is allowed as long as you give it an Eberron spin. - The DM can help you customize your PC for the Eberron Campaign Setting if you need help. - Your character must be a team player who works with the other PCs, must have a reason to be on Icewhite Island, and must have a reason to stop the Endless Winter. - Pre-Gens are available just in case, especially in the early levels when it is deadliest. - Characters must not break the immersion of the setting and the module, such as joke characters that only exist for a single pun or being something similarly obnoxious. - Backgrounds and backstory will be used for story opportunities. But keep backstories digestible. Anything longer than a few paragraphs is too much for anyone to keep in mind. Also be aware this is in the wilderness so if any important NPCs or locations in your backstory are not local to the area...you'll never see them in the game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord and D&D Beyond account with a stable internet connection with a working reliable microphone, and speakers or headset. Webcam is optional, but nice to have. Knowledge of the Eberron Campaign setting is highly encouraged because it is what makes this conversion special. I will do my best to provide information about the world session by session, but folks already knowing about the setting does make it easier. Beginner players are welcome, but may find themselves overwhelmed as we will be using rules for survival, salvage, and exploration. Plus, Eberron is a unique setting. It is a lot for someone new. Players should NOT read the module, visit subreddits about it, or watch Actual Plays of it. I may run another version of this for experienced players(who have played it before) in the future, but for this one, I want fresh players who know nothing. If you have only read a bit of the adventure before, you will have to play dumb and not metagame. I might have an opportunity for one person who has read the adventure before, but I shouldn't have to use it.

What Lanodantheon brings to the table

I have been playing D&D for 30 years, so I bring a lifetime of experience to players to make for a fun game as well as a load of stories of what works and what does not. At the start of the campaign, I ask players for 3x things they want out of the game and 3x things they don't want. You can't satisfy all of them, but you can at least get good data-points. If you give me good material, you are more likely to get great material. I will also help you in making a better character without telling you how to play your character. I encourage different playstyles, as long as the group is having fun. I have run this conversion before, so I know how fun it can get. I will be using cinematic music, custom maps, voice acting, and other flourishes to create a full experience at the table. I am a Film and Animation guy, so I will be experimenting with custom assets in Blender and Unreal Engine 5. I encourage players to get creative, but to work together. I lived through the days of "DM vs Players" mentality, and I will not have it. No one "Wins" at D&D. Rules-wise, I like to stick to Rules as Written until we get comfortable, and then make adjustments and allow for Rule of Cool. At the end of the day, the DM is the final arbitrator of the rules. Though when I do make a ruling, I try to remain consistent in whatever I decide, and I try to choose the option that is a balance of the fairest and the most fun. I will be using Bastions only if Players are interested in that mechanic. I also reserve the right to tailor encounters and challenges for a suitable difficulty. If PCs are steamrolling an encounter that is supposed to be difficult, I will gleefully throw in something unexpected.

Homebrew rules

We will be using survival rules and crafting rules. There are few general stores in this wilderness, so you will need to scrounge. - Encumbrance and fatigue will be tracked because the area is deadly. - Food will spoil and freeze over time. You will have to scavenge for food and cook it to survive. - Long Rests will be affected by whether or not you have adequate shelter. - The Endless Winter has had some weird magical effects on the region. Until it is rectified by player action or discovery, certain spells that trivialize the survival and exploration parts of play will not work effectively. This includes spells such as Leomund’s Tiny Hut, the nourishing effects of Goodberry, and other spells. - Flying species, spells, and permanent magical items that allow for flight will be hindered by the Endless Winter and unavailable until a solution is found. In other words, you won’t be able to fly for a while. - Certain Subclasses may be adjusted on a case-by-case basis for a better quality of life. For example, a Beastmaster Ranger will be able to command their pet without using an action.

Safety

How Lanodantheon creates a safe table

I will be using a Session 0 to set expectations. I will be using a Lines and Veils document. X cards will be used within Foundry. Content can be adjusted for players within limits, but be aware of the content warnings listed for the best play experience. I like to check in with folks throughout the game to take the temperature and make sure folks are vibing with the game. I will also check in sometimes during or at the end of scenes to see how folks are feeling and whether things are getting intense. Consent of the whole group with the material is very important to me, as is providing a space where players can speak openly. By default, I do not allow for any kind of racism, discrimination, or any kind of sexual violence within the game. Any romance fades to black by default, by personal preference. I am not afraid to stop a game and rewind the action at any time because of a toxic player. I do not allow PvP in any way unless all players consent to the scene.
