Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation & Guidelines, are discussed generally during session zero, however are encouraged to get a jump start on building their characters through DnD Beyond. We use the 2024 rule set when creating characters. Session Zero is a great opportunity to ensure team synergy & set player expectations. The last thing we want is a team of all warlocks. When creating your characters: ● Stats - Point buy or Standard array ● Leveling - Milestone ● Alignment - no evil aligned for this campaign ● Races - Any available from Player Handbook 2024 are approved, other races are available but must be approved by the GM either prior or during session zero. ● Class restrictions - Artificer & Illriger ● Item’s - Starting Equipment ● Backstories - are encouraged and must be discussed & approved by GM. Backstories are often woven into the story, to the best of GM's ability.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need: A computer with microphone & mouse (Mobile and Tablets not compatible with VTT) A Level 1 character, created through D&D Beyond (No Artificers or Illrigers for this campaign) Access to Discord(Voice) & Foundry VTT(Maps) (Both Free) To provide your character sheet and meet with the GM prior to the first session to discuss backstory, done during Session Zero. Any questions can be directed to the GM either in Start Playing or through Discord once you've received the link. Discord and Character Campaign Links are often provided a week before the games start, Session Zero is used to work out all system issues and familiarize players with the software. Foundry VTT link will be provided during Session Zero. DISCLAIMER: ALL GAMES ARE FINAL, Ryvan_VTT does not refund for no shows or cancelations less than 24 hrs in advance of a session.

What Ryvan_VTT brings to the table

The GM uses Foundry VTT & Discord to run the games. A Campaign through DnD Beyond is provided to all players prior to the game, this not only keeps our characters organized, but gives the players access to all DnD Beyond material shared by the GM to the players. You can expect a narrative centered campaign, focused on the inclusion of character backstory and a main plot to carry the players through. This is enhanced by ambient music and unique voice performances provided by the GM. While Rules as Written can be important for consistency, the GM rewards creativity above all, sticking closer to a rule of cool approach.

Homebrew rules

House Rules - These are rules we follow at my table, meant to enhance the game further and bring a unique experience when playing with the GM. Critical Success - Nat 20 ● Melee & Ranged attacks - follow 2024 rules ● Saving throws - when you roll a Nat 20 on a saving throw, say from a fireball, you do not take any damage, successfully dodging the attack Critical Failure - Nat 1 ● Melee attack - opens the player up to a potential opportunity attack from a foe in combat ● Ranged attack - results in the weapon jamming/braking, costing a future action to fix ● Spell attack - rebounded spell, the spell fails causing the caster to roll damage take half instead ● Saving throws - rolling a 1 in an area of effect, a fireball for example, results in critical/double damage. Flanking is done when two allies position themselves on opposite sides of the enemy, providing all melee combatants within range advantage on attack rolls; this does not apply to ranged attacks or spells. Potions are always a Bonus Action: to drink, to administer or to pass to another player. Character Deaths - You should have a back up character idea, but do not need to share until needed in game. During the game, when a character dies, you as the player will become a ghost for the remainder of the session, we’ll meet after to discuss your next character and how we will introduce them into the story. This way you can still observe the story and contribute. Ghosts can provide ghostly inspiration to other players, up to 3 times. Allowing them to re-roll any d20, but will be unable to interact any further. Furthermore, if an ally is downed, but stable (making all three death saves, an ally casting spare the dying or rolling above a DC 10 Medicine check), the player may make a CON ability check, DC 20, to get back up & rejoin the fight, they do so with 1 HP.

Safety

How Ryvan_VTT creates a safe table

For the safety and wellbeing of our players, and to ensure everyone has fun, a PDF is provided prior to Session Zero that includes a questionnaire asking for potential triggers or problematic subjects to avoid in the game. Session Zero is used to set expectations and ensure all players are fully aware of the adventure ahead. The Game Master strives to create an inclusive and safe space for all players. In addition, you can expect a 10-15min break during each session.
