About the adventure

Picture this: you're on a train hurtling through wild terrain - could be a tangled jungle of vines and beasts, an oceanic causeway with an endless view, or a celestial starfield glittering brightly. Everything is calm... until suddenly! The doors burst open, raving bandits storm aboard, each hellbent on stealing something - or someone - and you are caught in the crossfire chaos! This is a one-shot adventure where the setting, the villains, their target, and the unexpected twist that threatens everyone's survival are all decided by the roll of the dice. No two games are ever the same - perfect for players who love unpredictable storytelling, quickfire chaos, and cinematic action. In OFF THE RAILS, you and your fellow players take on the roles of passengers with secret objectives: you could be an undercover guard, a stowaway, a disguised member of the gang, or even a secret royal! Every player rolls a unique role and agenda, which could pit the party against each other. Trust is optional, chaos guaranteed. Whether you want to leap from car to car in a madcap rooftop chase, talk your way through a hostage standoff, or betray your fellow passengers for the score of a lifetime, OFF THE RAILS delivers a wild, player-driven experience. Forget railroading. Where we're going, we don't need tracks!

About me

Hello! I'm David Knight, storyteller, world builder, and Dungeon Master. With 10 years experience both playing and running long-form D&D campaigns, I love games that focus on the players' tragic backstories interwoven into juicy, lore-filled landscapes. You can hear me as Dungeon Master for the No Small Rolls podcast, where I've guided our troupe through 101 episodes of our first campaign, alongside shorter 4-6 episodes adventures, weaving intrigue, plot twists, and silliness. I love good head-scratching puzzles, social deductions, and rug-pulls that keep the players on the edge of their seats or taking big swings to overcome the challenges. I have the most fun when everyone at the table is so engaged in the story that I get to sit back and watch them have fun.

Make sure you have a clear microphone, stable internet access, and free accounts on Discord and DnDBeyond. Video chat is optional but recommended.

What David brings to the table

Expect a living, reactive, completely unique adventure that your characters can be immersed in with plenty of improvised chaos. Roleplay trumps Roll-play and whilst I try to run games by the rules, but they are not the focus and the Rule of Cool is always a winner!

Homebrew rules

- Critical Success and Fail on Ability Checks. - Fail-Forward Consequences on Critical Fails, and you choose how it goes wrong!

Safety

How David creates a safe table

At the top of the session, we'll have a brief discussion of Lines and Veils for content topics that players do not wish to be included in the randomness. During gameplay X,N, and O cards will be used and respected, and post-game my channels will always be open for anyone to express any concerns. Not all the listed content warnings will appear in the game, however with the free-flow improv style of the game, there is always a possibility. Regardless of randomised chaos, any form of discrimination (homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, or other) or player abuse will not be tolerated at the table.
