About the adventure

Hidden in the mists surrounding the valley of Barovia, an ancient evil waits. This is an extended, fully-fleshed-out reimagining of Curse of Strahd, using resources from the source book, several other third party supplements, and my own changes from years of running this campaign for several different parties of adventurers. This campaign is not for the feint of heart, and although I'm fine with fairly new beginners, I would suggest skipping this one if it's your first time playing Dungeons and Dragons. It is a bit of a sandbox, and one of the more difficult adventures published by WOTC. This is an lgbtqia+ friendly game, and senseless bigotry and hate will not be tolerated at my table. We will play on Roll20, using Discord for voice. The first session (Session 0) will be free.

About me

I’m Nathan, and I am a D&D-aholic. I’ve spent most of my life immersing myself into fantasy lore of all kinds and the better part of the last decade roleplaying and storytelling as a DM. 5th edition is my go-to, but I’ve been known to branch off occasionally to try something new. I try to bring a fun-first approach to my games, often overlooking Rules as Written and preferring “hey that’s dope, let’s try to work it out!” I run anything from horror to old-school fantasy to science-fiction, and I’m open to try to in-betweens as well. My games are lgbtqia+ friendly, and I don’t tolerate player-hate at my tables.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will start at level 1. I will allow a vote on how to handle stats, be it Point Buy, Roll, or Standard Array. There are 5 customized hooks for your character for you to choose from, which will be discussed in Session 0. Any race in the PHB is allowed. You may use any of the official WOTC books (Tasha's, Xanathar's, etc.) for class, subclass, etc. Characters will be created in the Roll20 game, and sheets stored in the journal there. I do have most of the source books in the compendium so you shouldn't have any trouble with character creation.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord for voice, a mic that works well enough for me to hear you clearly, and a Roll20 account for the virtual tabletop.

What Nathan brings to the table

I play primarily with the Rule of Cool in mind. I prefer you (and myself) having fun over anyone being inhibited by rules. So while there are rules to be enforced, I am fully open for you to argue your case on bending them a little bit if it makes sense logically and will add to your happiness in gameplay. I play with a 50/50 approach to roleplay and combat. Expect an initial split between the two, and then I'll assess how the group is doing in terms of comfort and interaction, and it may adjust accordingly. I often try to do voices for my characters, but I do not require you to do the same if that makes you uncomfortable. I usually do music or ambient sound in the background, but I am fine with not doing that if it is distracting. For this, we will discuss it in Session 0.

Safety

How Nathan creates a safe table

I usually take a break about halfway through the session regardless, but if there is a heavy emotional scene we will take another and provide an opportunity to talk about it and decompress. This will also be available at the end of each session if anyone needs it. Lines and Veils will be discussed in Session 0 as a group.
