About the adventure

The world of Shadowrun, known to denizens of the new age as the Sixth World, is a place of magic and high technology, a landscape of danger and mystery, a maze of noble sentiments and double-crosses. Those who play stand on the edge, in the shadow of adventure. We will be using Shadowrun TTRPG 5e rules, but the campaign starts in 2055, so you can play through the epic adventures from earlier editions of Shadowrun and get first-hand experience in some of the events that shaped the world. We'll kick off the campaign with the low-level adventures from 2nd Edition Shadowrun (SR2). The world is changed—Awakened. A lull in the flow of mystical energies subsided, and magic returned to the world. Elves, dwarfs, orks, and trolls assumed their true form, throwing off their human guise. Creatures of the wild changed, too, becoming things of myth and legend. Modern society fights on, despite the odds, to assimilate the ways of magic into a technological world. The decades that followed the Awakening were years of turmoil, panic, and chaos as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse seemed to race across the Earth. Primitive cultures that had never lost touch with their mystical past began to use magic against the great nations that had suppressed them for so long. The vast, global telecommunications network collapsed under an assault by a mysterious computer virus. War, epidemics, and famine ravaged the world's populations as new races tried to fight for acceptance and dragons soared into the skies. Out of the devastation and anarchy, order slowly reemerged. Cybertechnology eradicated the last vestiges of the computer virus and replaced the old telecommunications network with what became known as the Matrix. New nation-states were formed. Metroplexes sprawled over the landscape. Governments were replaced by megacorps. The employees of the megacorps were protected, but dissidents, and rebels were exploited and abused, continuing a condition that has existed between the weak and the powerful since time began. Technology, too, has changed people. No longer only flesh, many have turned to cyberware to make themselves more than human—more robust, more intelligent, and faster. In the world of 2050, the metroplexes are monsters casting long shadows. And it's in the cracks between the giant corporate structures that shadowrunners find their home. When the megacorps want a job done, but they don't want to dirty their hands, it's a shadowrun they need. The runners might be a decker, sliding like a whisper through the visualized databases of giant corporations, spiriting away the only thing of real value--information. Or perhaps they are a street samurai, an enforcer for hire whose combat skills and reflexes make him the ultimate urban predator. Or perhaps they are a mage, possessing an ancient gift, the ability to wield and shape the magical energies that now surround the Earth. And that's exactly the kind of firepower you'll need If you get hired to make a Shadowrun.

About me

I have been running games since I was ten years old and have always enjoyed stories of hijinks and high adventure as well as the occasional creepy crawl into the shadowy abyss. I enjoy a wide variety of games and love to have a table filled with laughter. I have experience running games for players between 7 years old and 87 years old, if you need an experience tailored to your specific age group or other demographic, I would be happy to work with you to get just the game you are looking for. You can learn more about me and some of my games at my website: caithegm.com

Character creation

Creating your character

We will have a session zero where we can talk about party composition as a team, then we'll make characters together. You can download Chummer 5 to play around with character concepts, we'll be using the 'Standard' characters and you can export your character from Chummer into Foundry VTT.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need either a PC or Mac-compatible PC with broadband internet access and electricity to play in this game; a mouse with left and right buttons, as well as a third button and mouse wheel is optimal for online use of Foundry VTT. You will need a Discord account to access the game chat. The Foundry VTT runs on a modern web browser, so there is nothing to install if you have a browser on your computer. If you have an older computer, you might consider using the Foundry Lightweight Client, which is a free lightweight web browser that gives you the most bang for your machine's capabilities. You can get it for free here: https://flc.ruleplaying.com/ If you intend to speak in the voice channel on Discord, you should have a headset with a microphone. *You will be required to set up a push-to-talk button*; you are, however, free to communicate to the group using text only in Discord, but you will then need speakers to hear their chat and the game sounds. Special text-only sessions are available for the deaf and hard of hearing. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you'd like to schedule one. Bringing a friend or two would help ensure we don't need to recruit additional players. While text-only is actually my preferred method of play, it does seem difficult to organize those games. Instructions for setting up the push-to-talk button and installing all the needed software are available on my Discord channel (#getting-started), to which you will be supplied a link when you join. You can download the quickstart rules for free at <https://rb.gy/ofv9im> but you are welcome to come to session zero with no knowledge of the system and learn as we play.

You can expect fast action, creative mysteries, and cyberpunk heist hijinx using the Shadowrun 5th edition rules and the Foundry VTT ruleset, supercharged with some wonderful extensions to give you an immersive experience. This is conceptualized as a 'grand campaign' and it is possible if you start with a 20 year-old character in 2055 you could find yourself as a prime runner in the 2070s at the height of your game and power.
