Children of the Mist: A Curse of Strahd Campaign

Children of the Mist: A Curse of Strahd Campaign

Wolves howl and dead trees groan in misty forests, old towns house the soulless and a dark castle overlooks all. And it all feels eerily familiar.

About the adventure

The mists envelope the landscape, beasts and monsters lurk around every corner, devious souls plot against the innocent and hideous creatures prey upon them. Standing over them all is the Lord of Castle Ravenloft, Count Strahd von Zarovich, who simply watches in solitary boredom. That is until new visitors arrive. This gothic horror styled adventure is the Curse of Strahd campaign module with a few personal twists and additions from the Game Master. As wayward adventures find themselves trapped in the dark, cursed land of Barovia, they will encounter the soulless and hopeless of the towns, the jovial Vistani people, monsters with varying dangers and challenges, and all the dark histories and dealings surrounding them. But these adventurers would also begin noticing how the land is familiar to them somehow. As they travel they may recognize places and peoples: names, events and knowledge will flash into their minds with no clear source. Understanding these occurrences may yet be the key to overcome the power holding Barovia captive. Ultimately, this will culminate in a careful crawl or a full on assault through Castle Ravenloft to put an end to Strahd's dominion over the land and it's people. Either the adventures will narrowly succeed in their endeavor to conquer Barovia's evil, or add to the lost souls consumed by it.

About me

Hello, My name is Andrew. I'm 24 years old and I've been DMing for friends for over 7 years. I've run a few pre-written modules for D&D 5e, and now I'm becoming more involved in my personal homebrew world. No matter what I run, I always try to be player focused to make sure everyone is having a great time. Whether it's character driven stories, dangerous dungeon runs, or the group's funny shenanigans, I do my best to create a game where every person can feel included in a game they want to be a part of. Whether you've been playing for years or if you're brand new and wanting to learn, I'm hoping I can provide a fun space for everyone.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be specific to each game and worked on in Session 0. General Rules are as follows: - All character will be made in my D&D Beyond Campaign - All character options (race, class, subclass, etc.) will be what is available on D&D Beyond that I own or that can be content-shared - Any Homebrew options on D&D Beyond the Player wishes to use must be approved the GM - Use of anything outside of D&D Beyond that cannot be shared with the GM is prohibited to make sure everything is organized and fair.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players Checklist - Be ready to have fun and work with different people from many different walks of life (Respect is Mandatory, Insults/Discrimination Will Not be Tolerated) - Have a stable internet connection to run Discord (Discord Account Needed) and Foundry VTT (Virtual Table Top) (No Account Needed for Foundry) - Have a Microphone that can be used for Discord Voice Chat (Webcam Not Necessary) - Have D&D Beyond Account (Free Version) set up to create character in Session 0. - After Session 0, study your character to know well enough what they can do and how things work for features, actions, spells, etc. (I don’t expect memorizing rules and features, just understand your character’s potential) - If you have any questions, comments or concerns, reach out to me asap and I'll do everything I can to help out

What Andrew Carter brings to the table

I always try my best to lean with the group to see what is enjoyable for everyone as we play; some games may be combat heavy and light on roleplay or vice versa, but ultimately I try to blend as much as possible so we can all enjoy the game. My biggest goal is for everyone to be able to join a group and play together, and that means everyone. No matter race, religion, creed, or identity, I want my players to feel welcome to play and safe from any harm or harassment at my table. I offer free Session 0s to get introduced to one another and the game. Any help that is asked from me before, during, or after the Session 0 is welcome, I never liked being left behind in certain games and I try to make sure I'm walking with my players to ensure we all stay and have fun preparing and playing together. Through Discord Voice Chat I attempt to use ambiance and music to aid in the narrative and immersion. And thanks to discord I'm fairly easy to get ahold of when needed. I use Foundry VTT as my main gathering spot for the game and use maps and visuals for some added immersion, or to help those that struggle a bit with "theater of the mind". I also use D&D Beyond to help in character creation and management for myself and my players; whether you are new to it all or have been playing for a while, I find it is the easiest way to have the party information all in one place.

Homebrew rules

Healing Potions: Roll for healing when taking as a bonus action; get max healing when taking as an action. Potions: Can be taken as bonus actions. Spell Scrolls: Anyone can use. Spellcasters that have the spell in their spell list have no issues casting. Spellcasters that don't make a DC 12+spell's level Arcana check. Non-spellcasters make a DC 16+spell's level Arcana check. Initiative Swapping: Players that roll for initiative and are on the initiative board without an enemy in between them can decide if they mutually want to switch places (both parties must agree). 2014 & 2024 Rules: I allow both rule sets. If only one rule set is used, we stick with that rule set. If both are used, all players can have access, if there is a conflict we will apply and decide which rule set is more suited for the situation (DM final say).

Safety

How Andrew Carter creates a safe table

All of my Session 0s are free for signed-up players, there we go over character creation, GM and Player expectations, and any holds or subjects of concern to make sure that EVERYONE can feel welcome and safe prior to game day. Any breaks, whether set by me (the GM) or needed for the individual player(s) are perfectly fine and understandable. It is only asked that they be used with respect to resting in free moments of the game, taking care of quick urgent matters, or personal care if feeling uncomfortable (in which case, let me know). After the session, I would quickly go over any points of the game that people enjoyed, answer any lasting questions, confront any problem areas, and give me feedback for improving or continuing further games.
