About the adventure

The land of Barovia is accursed by ancient blight. Mists shroud the land from sunlight, the dead rise and winters are cruel and long. The valley's people live in fear, especially of the county's deathless master. Even centuries after he claimed power, his name still silences villages when some fool is brave enough to utter it - and he craves fresh entertainment. It's against this backdrop that the Mists spirit you from your homeland into the Demiplane of Dread. Far from home, you must survive the perils of this land, as winter tightens its icy grip and hope itself freezes solid. But he is watching. And while Fate might play a hand, that will be small consolation. For he is the Ancient, he is the Land. Dead of Winter: Curse of Strahd is a campaign with elements of horror and a heavy focus on social interaction, with combat and exploration still present.

Character creation

Creating your character

During Session 0, using the 2024 Player's Handbook. Point buy will be used to determine starting stats, and characters will begin at level 2. If you want to use a different resource for character creation, let me know which one and I'll review it. Characters will all have a personalised quest and start with a (cosmetic) relic that is in some way associated with their quest. The Daylight spell does not count as Sunlight.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Discord account is required as is joining the Discord server I'll use for the game (link will be DMed after registration).

What Rowan brings to the table

Session 0 is free. I like to run tactical combat. For rules questions, I use whichever of Rules as Intended, Rules as Written and Rules as Fun makes sense for the specific situation (with a bias to rules as written), and then apply that rule to any future scenarios. I run games with a lot of social interaction, and homebrew mechanics into social and exploration encounters. I use background music and give each NPC a distinct voice. Combat/dungeon crawling uses a battlemap with dynamic lighting, whereas set pieces/social interaction use background art.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action. You can use an action to gain maximum health from a potion of healing. Food/water are condensed into Supplies. Dying is modified. Most monsters/enemies are original or third-party, and will be very or completely different to the monsters found in the Monster Manual.
