About the adventure

This is a high level one-shot highlighting a particular historic moment somewhere and sometime in the Forgotten Realms - in this particular case, you will be fighting a Walking Statue of Waterdeep during the Spellplague! This event is not recommended for new players given its high level, fast pace and high risk. Some encounters may loosely be considered a historical reenactment based on accepted lore, while others with less established lore may result in future one-shots to continue the story, thereby establishing new lore in the Sentinel universe. Depending on the target creature, there may also be a triggered end to a particular encounter to keep in line with accepted lore; those scenes will be roleplayed out and may result in players' characters witnessing a powerful moment with a historical figure and perhaps even provide an opportunity for players to actively engage in that moment! I believe that rules are meant to be bent. You will have plenty of opportunities to add some flair to your characters' actions, possibly adding an additional effect to an attack on an enemy or gaining advantage on a persuasion check by finding a creative way to gain favor with a guard to get them to help you or simply let you get past them. There is a time and place for following rules as written, but Rule of Cool is way more fun!

About me

I am a new Dungeon Master who has been a D&D 5E player for 4 years and completed several in-person and online D&D campaigns and one-shots. I have soaked up as many tips as I could from paid, professional DMs including Critical Role's Matthew Mercer and Brennan Lee Mulligan, as well as a few DMs right here on StartPlaying! I have known from the moment I started my first session of Out of the Abyss that I wanted to be a DM; by the time I joined the fight against Vecna, I collected a comprehensive list of rules I wanted to incorporate, as well as a list of things I wanted to do differently. I challenged DMs by coming up with creative solutions to problems, knowing that one day my players would do the same to me. I am now at a point where I want to share what I have come up with. I look forward to rolling with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

You will be able to create your characters in D&D Beyond with a simple, detailed checklist which includes things like extra starting gold, magic items, etc. You will roll for ability scores in Discord using Avrae. You will be given access to a compendium of books to select species, backgrounds, magic items, etc. Players will have access to character content from the following source books: Players Handbook (2024) Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide Tasha's Cauldron of Everything The Book of Many Things Xanathar's Guide to Everything Eberron: Forge of the Artificer Astarion's Book of Hungers The Griffon's Saddlebag: Book Two

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to join our Discord server and have a D&D Beyond account - both start out as free with paid options available with additional features. You will be given a link to the Foundry VTT server shortly after joining.

What MGMike brings to the table

I am certainly not Matthew Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan, but I will do my best to provide different voices and sounds for NPCs and creatures. I will provide detailed maps and character art to reduce the need for theater-of-the-mind as much as possible. I will also use Foundry modules and macros to enhance the players' characters abilities whenever possible.

Homebrew rules

1. Drinking a potion or giving one to a willing creature is a Bonus Action. 2. The only ammunition tracking required is for thrown weapons and magical ammunition. 3. Healing potions heal max HP unless the PC is under the effect of another potion. 4. A skill check has a higher DC if the PC doesn't have proficiency or background knowledge. a. A PC must have skill proficiency to use the Help Action. b. Failing a skill check does not necessarily mean the PC fails to complete the task. 5. Critical hits result in rolling damage and adding modifiers, then add max dice damage. 6. Creatures or objects between a PC and their target will result in the use of Cover rules.

Safety

How MGMike creates a safe table

A Google Form is linked in the Discord server for players to provide a confidential list of Lines and Veils. At any time during the session, a player can send a private direct message to the DM to indicate campaign content may be approaching a Line or Veil; the DM will call for a very brief break to verify receipt of the message and whenever possible, prepare any changes that may need to be made.
