About the adventure

Your town mayor is a child—an eighteen-year-old kid and the only person left to run Squall’s End since the plague ripped through it four weeks ago. In the town square, you stand before your new mayor, Ben. He puts on a brave face to hide the fear in his eyes as he says, “You are our only hope. Two adventuring parties have already scaled the mountain seeking the cure and did not return. You are the only people left who are skilled enough to climb the mountain, find the cure, and save us all.” Ben reaches into his satchel and pulls out a simple box wrapped in twine. “Before the plague claimed the previous mayor, he gave me this box and said, ‘Only open it if all hope is lost, and not a second before.’ I have no idea what’s inside this box, but I entrust it to you. Climb the mountain, gather the cure, and stop whatever’s causing this plague.” Ben hands you the box, and you have a choice to make. Do you take the fast way—the high road to Mt. Yeok—like the previous parties? Or do you take the slow way—a boat that sails around the mountain to get to its base? This choice is the first of many that might save your lives. Or take them. --------------- In this haunted mountain adventure, you will play as a heroic adventurer from the town of Squall’s End. Race against time to find the cure and stop whatever is causing this deadly, magical plague. This adventure offers: ⚔️ high-stakes combat 🏔️ atmospheric exploration 🔎 a mystery to solve This is a beginner-friendly adventure for level 3 characters.

About me

Hi friends! My name is Kat, and I am a published author, video game narrative designer, and professional D&D game master. My debut novel, Good People, is forthcoming from Simon & Schuster in 2027. I’ve also worked as a writer for a South Korean video game developer. My game writing credits include Delabs Games’ Rumble Racing Star, Space Frontier, and other titles launched by Delabs Games’ parent company 4:33 Creative Lab. When it comes to D&D, I use my professional writing and game design experience to create immersive, custom stories with unique game loops. In addition to being a game master and professional writer, I’ve taught creative writing at the University of South Florida, and I use my college-level teaching experience to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for any new players at my tables.

Character creation

Creating your character

I have pre-made characters for every class. If you’d like to use one, let me know in our Discord server. If you want to create your own character, here are the guidelines: - Level: 3 - Allowable Player Options: Use official 2024 content only. Homebrew content is not allowed. - Stats: Use Point Buy or Standard Array - Starting Equipment: You can use the standard starting equipment for your class/background or select the gold to purchase your equipment. All players start with 100 gold regardless of how they choose their starting equipment. Be sure to set the gold in your inventory to 100 gp after creating your character. - Magic Item Allotment: 1 uncommon magic item from the 2024 Player's Handbook or 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide. This item must be a permanent item (i.e. no consumables like potions or scrolls). - World Tie: Squall's End is your character’s hometown, and you are fighting for someone you love. You can determine who this person is and why they are important to you during character creation, or you can roll on our Personal Connection table at the start of the game to see who in your character’s life is sick with the plague. Let me know what you choose on Discord!

What to expect

To play, you will need the following: 1. A microphone 2. Headphones to prevent echoes 3. A laptop or desktop computer 4. A reliable Internet connection 5. A free DnDBeyond account 6. A free Discord account 7. Cameras are optional. (I will have mine on!) To join our game, follow these steps: 1. Join our Discord server. A link will be provided after booking. What Kat brings to the table

I will provide maps on D&D Beyond, immersive music, and narrative-driven combat. I do my best to provide character voices for NPCs. As for rules, we'll be using the Rule of Cool for the most part.

Homebrew rules

Perkins Critical Hits: Roll once, then add the maximum possible damage for the damage die. (E.g. If you rolled a critical hit for your longsword attack, your damage will be 1d8 + 8 + your modifier.) Concentration Checks: If you roll a natural 20 on a concentration check, you enter a state of "Perfect Focus." For the rest of this combat, damage can no longer force you to make concentration saves for that specific spell. Your concentration will only end if the spell’s duration expires, you cast another concentration spell, or you are incapacitated.

Safety

How Kat creates a safe table

A link to our Lines and Veils document is available in the #🏁start-here channel on Discord. If you have any lines or veils you'd like to add to your game, DM me. No need to explain anything at all. I will anonymously add them to the list for our game to ensure the whole group is on the same page—no questions asked. We will also use X-Cards. If a scene or description makes you uncomfortable, simply type "X" in the text chat or say "Pause." We will immediately stop, skip the scene, or adjust the narrative—no questions asked and no explanation needed. You may DM me the X if you prefer. I’m very good at changing gears on a dime, and we’ll move on immediately.
