About the adventure

How would you like to spend your Mondays....in hell!? Descent into Avernus, a dark and twisted adventure that takes the party to hell itself. Lots of twists, turns, deals and journeying across the hellscape in infernal war machines! Mad Max meets D&D fantasy in Avernus! Our journey begins in the holy city of Elturel, a city steeped in both holy light and shadowy intrigue. Hired as freelance agents for the Flaming Fist of Baldur's Gate, our adventurers find themselves draped in cloaks of secrecy, tasked with peeling back the layers of a perplexing enigma: the disappearance of Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate: Ulder Ravenguard. Amidst the vibrant festivities of the Festival of Spring Dawn, Elturel harbours a malevolent undercurrent, a sinister presence lurking just beneath its serene faƧade. Can our band of daring heroes untangle the threads of mystery before the darkness consumes them all? The stage is set, the curtain drawn, and the fate of Elturel hangs in the balance. Join me and a very welcoming and inclusive table of players, in this adventure of espionage, dark pacts, deals with devils, a city in despair and array harrowing choices to be made. This is my take on the famous Descent into Avernus campaign! Here's what to expect: šŸ”„ A dark, gritty yet also humorous campaign, with some of my own spicy homebrew twists! It starts with the party unravelling the mystery of what's going on behind the scenes at Elturel, only to find themselves caught in the chaos of the Descent the fiery hell of Avernus itself! šŸ”„ Characters start at level 4 and end at level 12. Have a few ideas for back up characters in mind. This will be a campaign full of trying and gritty encounters! (We are currently at level 4). šŸ”„ There will be plenty of chances for role play in the hellscape! Avernus is grim and unrelenting. The party will encounter all sorts of compelling NPCs, opportunities to make decisions on devilishly difficult deals, and do whatever it takes to survive in hell! šŸ”„ I am an amateur voice actor and improv performer. I will strive to provide engaging NPCs with their own unique personalities, voices and motivations. šŸ”„ Through Foundry VTT, you will experience immersive playlists, sound effects, art and effects. About me

Hello to all you wonderful players and fellow GMs! My name is Cosmo The GM and I’ve been running and playing games of D&D since 2019, and I’ve loved playing roleplay video games ever since I first played the first 'Legend of Zelda' game on the NES way back in the early 90s. Since then, I've gone on to fall in love with and play many RPGs, from many of the Final Fantasy games, to Skyrim and the Witcher 3, to the modern masterpiece of Baldur's Gate 3. When I first played D&D, it sparked a passion in me that has brought me so much joy. The ability to be able to tell collaborative stories with friends and strangers, who then became good friends, alike. While I still love video games, they are still limited somewhat by their coding and programming. D&D and other TTRPGs are more or less limited by your imagination, and that has huge appeal. Live play shows and the work of DMs like Matt Mercer, Brennan Lee Mulligan, Matt Corville, Ginny Di, The Dungeon Dudes and many more have influenced me. Creating your character

On DNDBeyond. If you only have access to the free version then let me know and I will invite you to the campaign, where I have some of the extra materials unlocked. Both standard array and point buy are fine. Please stick to races published up to Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - and no flying races please. Please also provide a back story for your character before the start of the first session. This could be a few paragraphs or a few pages, just not a novel length backstory please! :-)

How Cosmo The GM creates a safe table

šŸ–„ļø We will use Foundry VTT to play the actual game, DNDBeyond for character creation and Discord for voice chat (video is optional). šŸ“ž We will have a small 'session 0' one-on-one type interview by message or on a discord call before the game starts to talk about the game, your expectations and to see if it's the right campaign for you. šŸŽ­ I like lots of role play in my TTRPGS, both as a GM and a player. There will also of course be plenty chances for combat, exploration and a few puzzles. āš”ļø My combats are also more narrative driven and I have tweaked some of the standard rules. See these changes below. šŸ”„ This campaign takes place in literal hell. The battles will be crunchy and challenging. Character death is a real possibility in this campaign. Have ideas for back up characters in mind. ā¤ļø Speaking of hell, Avernus is a grim place and there will be dark themes throughout. If there any lines or triggers that you have, then please let me know so that I can adjust things accordingly. I use lots of safety tools to ensure that my players are comfortable. šŸŽ™ļø I like to do voices and really get into character. For players, it's up to you how much you want to get into it. There's no pressure at all to be on the Critical Roll level! But if you want to, by all means bring it on! šŸ“œ Helpful discussions at the table are encouraged. However, overt-metagaming and telling other people how to play their characters and the DM how to run the game will not be tolerated. I also like players to be prepared and on time. ā˜• There will be a ten minute break half-way through sessions for bathroom and snack breaks. I have some House Rules: šŸŽ² I have recently been experimenting with 'Role for Emphasis' (explained here - https://i.redd.it/nom1dscjfapa1.png) for clutch moments in games. It has made for some truly memorable moments! I will use it in this campaign. šŸŽ² Movement speed - your characters speed will be used more as a guideline than a cemented rule. This speeds up combat. šŸŽ² Attacks of opportunity and flanking - These only trigger if the player / enemy is surrounded. This also speeds up combat. šŸŽ² Nat 20s do double damage in combat and means no damage is taken if the roll is for a saving throw. Damage from a critical hit will also be carried over to creatures that are nearby to the target and have the same AC or lower. Real crits! šŸŽ² Nat 1s will lead to some sort of consequence decided by me at the time. It also means double damage taken on a failed saving throw. Both of these points are applied to NPCs too! šŸŽ² Potions can be taken as a bonus action. šŸŽ² Rules - Rules are there to keep order and structure to the game. That being said, I am the type of DM that likes the game to flow and not get overly bogged down by the rules all of the time. The DMs word and judgement is final though. Please respect that, because... šŸŽ² Rule of cool - Some the best moments in TTRPGs are born from this. I am willing to bend the rules to listen to ideas when it fits. Please be reasonable with requests to use it though.
