About the adventure

The Thinning Veil: A Beginner-Friendly D&D One-Shot Welcome to Grinroot—a crumbling town shrouded in mist, where lantern light flickers weakly against the shadows, and whispers linger in every alley. Long abandoned by its people, Grinroot sits at the edge of reality itself. Here, the line between the living and the otherworldly grows thinner each night. Rumors speak of a hidden cult, of strange symbols and rituals, of doors that should never be opened, and of the summoning of creatures that should not exist. This is the stage for The Thinning Veil, a one-shot designed especially for new or beginner players. You don’t need years of dice-rolling experience, a memorized rulebook, or a perfectly optimized character sheet. What you need is curiosity, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to step into a story filled with dark magic, eerie mysteries, and the thrill of the unknown. In Grinroot, you and your fellow adventurers will explore this abandoned town and the forest beyond in search of your memories and the source of the dark magic rumored to reside here. The choices you make—who to trust, where to explore, when to fight, and when to run—will shape how the story unfolds. This adventure is designed for five players at level 6, but most importantly, it’s built with flexibility and creativity in mind. The Rule of Cool is always in play. If you have an idea—leaping from a rooftop to smash down onto an enemy, trying to outwit a spirit with clever wordplay, or using your magic in wild, unexpected ways—this game welcomes it. The dice may decide the outcome, but your imagination shapes the story. Who This Session is For New or beginner players who want a first taste of Dungeons & Dragons without feeling weighed down by complex mechanics. Fans of spooky adventures who like their fantasy tinged with eerie forests, candlelit rituals, and the thrill of confronting something strange and otherworldly. Collaborative storytellers who want to laugh, experiment, and craft unforgettable moments with friends. What to Expect A dark and atmospheric setting in the haunted town of Grinroot, where the boundary between worlds grows dangerously thin. Encounters with cults, forbidden rituals, and summoned creatures that challenge both your courage and your creativity. Opportunities for combat, exploration, and roleplay, all woven into a flexible story. A safe and fun space where you can try wild ideas, build a story you’re excited about, and experience the magic of D&D together. The Thinning Veil isn’t just about defeating monsters—it’s about exploring the unknown, laughing at the unexpected, and sharing a story you’ll remember.

About me

Hello! After playing as a character in many 1-shots and campaigns with my friends, I am now taking on the next challenge of DND: becoming a DM! Im a new-ish DM who likes hosting new players and introducing players to DND in low-stress, high fun, community focused games.

Character creation

Creating your character

After registering for the session, players will be sent the link to create characters using DND Beyond. Character creation can include the following: - Any species or class available from the options provided for DND Beyond (content shared by myself) - Players can select from either the 2014 or 2024 rules. We will blend together these rules as needed in session - Characters should be level 6 - Characters should use Standard Array for assigning skill totals If you have questions regarding class, species, weapons, armor, etc. you are welcome to reach out to pitch the idea or ask about its inclusion!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need to have accounts for the following sites: - DND Beyond - The Forge - Discord Prior to the session I will send the specific links to access our DND Campaign for character creation, the Discord link for the session, as well as for access to the server through The Forge. Please keep an eye our for this information. We will be utilizing the Foundry VTT system through The Forge. It is recommended that if you have not used Foundry previously that you watch this video to learn the basics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2iRZ42fcJ0

What Jimmy (Tri-Nerd) brings to the table

This session will include the following: - Foundry VTT. This will include ambient music, lighting, and custom maps for the session! - I am a huge supporter of the Rule of Cool. The standard rules are meant to provide a structure for the game, and then to allow us to play with our characters and the story as is possible! - I am by no means a voice expert... I will tell most of the story/interact with players in my normal voice as a result. Players are welcome and encouraged to speak in their characters voice as they see fit!

Homebrew rules

Some homebrew rules to be aware of: - I support drinking a potion as a bonus action - I am not specifically tied to requiring spell components for lower level spells (unless the party wants to be specific on spell components!)
