About the adventure

The sleepy and unassuming town of Roaring Creek peeks out from the constant mountain mist. To the townsfolk, their world is steady and predictable. Everything they could possibly need is in town, why would they need to leave? Unfortunately their world is a little too perfect. Dangerous creatures lie in wait beyond the mist, often slipping through and escaping into town. It's up to the local Guardians to keep the town safe and truly unaware of the danger they're in. You have been called on to be the next Guardians. Perhaps you arrived from beyond the mist, an impossible newcomer at the town’s edge. Perhaps you suddenly see things others cannot and feel drawn to the old, abandoned camp on the outskirts, the Guardians’ home base. Can you rise to meet the mist’s threats and uncover the destiny that lies ahead? This campaign is a fun mashup of Greek Myth and Appalachia, inspired by the Percy Jackson series, Epic the Musical, and Hadestown. Session 0 is free and players can hop in and out of the campaign if needed. I know real life stuff happens sometimes. I try to be as flexible as possible.

About me

Hi! I'm Sunny, a professional Game Master with ten years of experience running diverse TTRPGs, including the Kids on Bikes series, Monster of the Week, and Dungeons & Dragons. While I am also a Social Work student and mental health advocate, my primary focus is delivering unforgettable narrative campaigns, often in partnership with professionals for therapeutic and educational environments.

Character creation

Creating your character

We are using all monster of the week playbooks, including tome of mysteries. If you want to play a homebrew playbook, you will need to get approval from me first. Our session zero will be free and I will assist players who need to make their character. Additionally, I invite players to private message me if they want help before the first session. You don't need to have your character fleshed out before session 0, I will be there early to assist players with character creation.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be using Discord and Roll20. Once the players are gathered, I can send invites to the server.

What Sunny brings to the table

I provide voices, ambiance music, and graphics to help describe the scene for players who struggle with theatre of the mind. I usually run things halfway between Rule of Cool and Rules as Written. If a rule is keeping a player from having fun, I am more than happy to alter it to our needs. I try to keep to the essence of the rule as much as possible but if it needs tweaks to make the game fun for everyone, I will try to find a way to make it work.

Homebrew rules

According to the rules when Investigating a Mystery or Reading a Bad Situation, you need a special improvement to be able to ask any question on a 12+. I do not require the advanced improvement to have that ability. If you roll a 12+ on either of these to moves, you can ask the Keeper any question. Within reason of course. I generally do not allow manipulating another player via the Manipulate Someone move. The only exception is if both players are enthusiastic about it and have a good reason for using the move.

Safety

How Sunny creates a safe table

I use a RPG consent checklist to help me set lines and veils. Players can either dm me on discord or whisper to me on Roll20 whether they need to stop the scene or slow down. I use Lines and Veils and Brie Sheldon's Script Change Tool. If a scene is going in a direction that a player does not feel comfortable with, they can either Rewind, Pause, or Fast Forward. Rewind means that a player wants to go back a bit and go in a different direction to avoid potential triggering or uncomfortable elements. Pause means that the player needs to take a break but the game can resume as it was after a short break. Fast Forward means that the player needs to skip over a scene. The player is fine with it happening in the in game world but does not feel comfortable having it described or playing it out. Additionally, I have a safety deck set up on Roll20. Players can use this to either say Keep Going, Pause, or Stop. Players can also whisper or dm me those words as well. Finally, I do an aftercare check in after every session after end of session questions and wrap up. I get players opinions on how the game is going, if there is anything they would like to change or add, if they need a specific plot to go in a different direction, and is there is anything else I can do for them. I usually offer short games or chatting to decompress after a particularly intense session as well. I also offer to talk about bleed and tools and resources that can help with combating it. Every single safety tool I use can be used anonymously to protect the player's privacy. A lot of players are afraid of using tools because they feel called out or put on a spotlight. I want to ensure that my players feel comfortable and safe enough to use the safety tools that I have set up. Players that are caught abusing any of my safety tools will be kicked from my table.
