About me

I go by the Gentle GM. Even in the midst of death-defying adventure or bone-chilling horror, I aim to be a warm and welcoming game master. I've run games for children players, seniors, and all ages in between. I try to suffuse hope, respect, and warmth into every session I run. I offer: 🏳️‍🌈 A welcoming, inclusive play style 🔥 Player-focused flair and action 🧭 Open-ended storytelling 🎭 Action, horror, awe, and comedy in-game ⚖️ Settings with themes of justice and transformation 📆 Over a decade of game mastering experience 🖋️ Know-how with dozens of systems At thirteen, two friends and I huddled around the Dungeons & Dragons 3e starter set, laughing at a natural 20 to breakdown a door with the fighter's head. In high school, I found the Call of Cthulhu rulebook and made investigators with friends, still clueless how to actually play. In 2014 with the launch of D&D 5e and Call of Cthulhu 7e, I committed to running these games and an old love sparked brilliantly to life! I've since taught dozens their first TTRPG! I'm also an inveterate dabbler in TTRPGs. If you're curious if I run a particular game, just ask! Images are used with permission from James' RPG Art, https://jamesrpgart.com.

Character creation

Creating your character

During our zero session, we'll: 1. Build out our setting, 2. Create our characters in Foundry, and 3. Build out our party relationships. Characters can use material from the Player's Handbook or Loot Tavern's expanded character options: - Ryoko's Guide to the Yokai Realms, including the elementalist Bender class! - Heliana's Guide to Monster Hunting, including the monster-keeper inspired Tamer class! Ability Scores 1. Players will each roll a 4d6 drop the lowest ability score spread. 2. Then players will decide together which score array will be used for all characters. 3. Characters will then have 3 points to spend on any ability scores, with a maximum final score of 18. (These bonuses replace origin ability scores increases.) This method blends the classic dice-rolling stat spread while maintaining consistency between characters for a more superheroic game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need: 1) Discord profile and to join the Gentle GM server 2) A computer (not a tablet) and internet access for the Gentle GM Foundry server. 3) A mic and headphones (webcam is encouraged, but not required) Players can use physical dice. Digital dice are available and integrated into Foundry.

What Caleb | The Gentle GM brings to the table

With over ten years of Dungeons & Dragongs GMing experience, I plan to deliver a grand, epic campaign of gargantuan proportions. I've used giant monster guidance from On the Shoulders of Colossus and Heliana's Guide to Monster Hunting already. Ryoko's Guide to the Yokai Realms promises, including the Foundry integrations, promises a premium player experience. Players will have the option to harvest monster parts, craft unique gear, and put their fingerprints on the wider world. In play, I deliver a physicality to NPC and monster performances. Added audio atmosphere and lighting effects (if supported) foster a theatrical experience. I work to emphasize backstory, make space for character feeling, and prompt players for flashbacks to deepen storytelling and stakes. I also use inspiration to allow players to create world details and overextend their characters beyond the norms. These elements have already been implemented in my home games to great effect. Expect to see cinematic combat with an emphasis on superhuman feats of strength and prowess. Players will be rewarded for tactical and creative thinking in the heat of battle or push the story forward to dramatic highs and devastating lows. Ally or rival factions making the most of these dark times for Sunrise City. Plan to test your mettle against the largest foes you've ever encountered!

Homebrew rules

Character creation includes all players rolling 4d6 and drop the lowest stat array then the players choosing which single array all will use. Instead of origin ability increases, players commit 3 points to any ability scores with a maximum of 18. Inspiration: I grant inspiration at the start of each session. Use it! Recover inspiration by: 1) playing up the genre tropes and character concept, 2) adding something especially vibrant or interesting to the setting, or 3) critically failing a roll. Inspiration can be used to: 1) reroll ANY dice roll, choosing the better result; 2) gain +2 to a dice roll; 3) turn a standard hit into a critical hit; 4) stabilize when reduced to 0 HP and dying; or 5) add something to a scene with immediate use (barrels of explosive powder, an oncoming magi-train, etc.). Mid-Combat Level Up: When the genre calls for it, we may level up in the midst of a climactic combat as an homage to, "This isn't even my final form!" and similar mid-scene power boosts. Consume Items as a Flexible Action: The added material include many consumables, including those derived from preparing (cooking, fermenting, combining) monster parts. To best use those, you can use either an action or a bonus action. Doom Points: Replacing Legendary Actions, named creatures have Doom Points equal to their proficiency bonus. Doom points mirror Inspiration with a variety of dastardly abilities to keep threats threatening. Doom points are public information.
