About the adventure

This campaign is expected to start in mid-February and will support 3-5 players. This campaign is a play-through of The Crooked Moon by Avantris Entertainment for Dungeons and Dragons 5e 2024. Players begin aboard the Ghostlight Express heading to Druskenvald, a demiplane where the living and the dead freely comingle in a fantastic landscape. The sun never rises in this mysterious land; instead, the world is bathed in an orange glow at its peak and swallowed by darkness at the opposite end. In the sky overhead eternally hangs a crescent moon with the visage of a leering hag. The Crooked Moon is a Folk Horror campaign and will explore topics consistent with themes found in other folk horror (examples include The Wicker Man, The VVitch, or Midsommar). This adventure features disturbing content including: graphic and gory violence, depictions of mental health issues, cultural and religious conflict, endangerment of children and animals, grotesque body horror, family trauma, allusions to suicide, and more. This game is intended for players with at least some experience in D&D 5e (not necessarily the 2024 rules, although that is what we'll be using). We will work together to create compelling and balanced characters to fit within the setting. The Crooked Moon has a large variety of its own species, subclasses, and backgrounds, but all character concepts are welcome. We'll prioritize your character's theme foremost; understanding who you are is more important than your class or role in a combat encounter. Here are some you'll want to think about in creating your character: - What are your character’s defining personality traits? - What ideals drive your character forward? - What are your character’s flaws? - What does your character fear and desire most? - Which archetype best applies to your character? - How has your character’s past shaped them? - How would you describe your character without mentioning what they do, what they have, or what they look like? - Are there any aspects of your character that are superfluous to the answers to the above questions or are thematically unfitting for a Folk Horror adventure? If you are comfortable with the dark themes, and you bring a sense of adventure, curiosity, and a healthy dose of excitement for the unknown, you are bound to have an excellent time playing. I look forward to playing with you!

About me

I have been playing RPGs for over 30 years and for a significant chunk of that period, I have been a forever-GM. But, it's not a label I wear begrudgingly. I genuinely enjoy that so many people enjoy my style of running games. I've decided to take my skills to this platform and see if others enjoy playing games with me as much as my friends and family. By trade, I've worked as a software developer and a stage actor. I have no qualms working with tech or in doing fun voices or active role-playing. I've used all of the major players in online RPGs and currently enjoy running games in Foundry (although this is not a requirement if you have something else you prefer). My primary experience is in D&D but I am not married to the system if you have a desire to play something else. I would love to try running something in Shadowdark, Daggerheart, Draw Steel, or Pathfinder 2E. I hope to get to know you and your group soon!

Character creation

Creating your character

Players are encouraged to create characters outside of the game and bring the concepts to me, or we can do so collaboratively if players aren't sure what to pick. Characters should be created at level 1 using the the standard array for ability scores. I start every campaign with a FREE session zero where we will get to know each other and make sure it feels like a good fit for all parties. We can talk about the overarching campaign, things to expect, safety tools, and more.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I require everyone to use Discord for communication about games. You should, at the bare minimum, have a microphone to voice chat. I encourage using webcams too, to help further immersion, but this is not required. All of my games are run on Foundry VTT (no purchase necessary on your part, I have the required license). If you are unfamiliar with using Foundry, I will gladly walk you through the basics in our session zero.

What Adrian brings to the table

I like games with a good mixture of roleplaying, tactical combat, and social encounters, so players should expect all of those. I also enjoy doing character voices but do NOT expect players to necessarily do so; you are encouraged to enjoy the game in whatever manner best fits you. When it comes to game rules, I do like using rules as written when they make sense, but I am no stranger to letting things veer into the fantastic or "cool" when it's a better fit. I also don't claim to be an expert in the rules and will gladly amend a ruling if you know the rules better than I.

Safety

How Adrian creates a safe table

Our first session (session zero) will go over all safety tools I use and the best ways they can be communicated. Player comfort and safety is first and foremost in all of my games and will be especially important given the darker themes of this campaign.
