About the adventure

Do you want to be a sailor of the treetops in a verdant post-apocalypse? Do you want to find port on chunks of earth and mountaintops, the last few safe places left to barter? Do you want to explore the weird world with ships of steel and chainsaws, leviathans and strange beasts, and deadly, infinitely-growing plants? Whether you've played role-playing games for years or are just starting out, The Wildsea may be the perfect system for you. Create a character to be a Wildsailor over the Wildsea, then create a ship with your crew mates to decide how you'll explore and what you'll do with your skills. Salvage, hunt, trade, explore, and adventure your way to reach your goals. This game is intended to be a full campaign of The Wildsea for people of all experience levels. If you've played in the Wildsea and can't get enough, if you've never played before but are familiar with RPGs, or if you've never played a role-playing game in your life, join us! Note: the Session Zero will be free to all players, so we can make sure everyone has a safe, enjoyable time storytelling with the other players.

About me

I'm a storyteller and software engineer who loves fantasy stories of all kinds, especially queer ones. I write, do game development/design, and build cool things in my spare time. I love reading, watching, and playing (in video, board, or tabletop game form, I'm not picky) amazing stories of all kinds. I love my cat. I've been a DM/GM/Storyteller for about ten years, specializing in D&D5e/PF2e, PbtA systems, and FitD systems. I love trying out new systems and sharing them with folks new or experienced!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters (and the crew/ship!) together during the session zero. Feel free to come to the table with ideas, but try not to be too strict with yourself. Come to the table with as much or as little of a character idea as you wish, and if you do end up making a character ahead of time, I'll work with you to fit it into the narrative the group decides to tell together.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need to download and install or use the browser version of Discord, as well as create an account if necessary, to join my tabletop server and the sessions. If you're able and comfortable, I would prefer the use of a webcam for better role-playing and reading of faces and voices. A decent microphone is required, and a stable internet connection so that everyone has a good audio experience would be preferred. You do not have to own a license for, download, or create an account to use Foundry Virtual Tabletop. I will take care of hosting it for you, and all the content for the game will live on that hosted server which you can connect to through any supported browser. You do not need to come to the session zero having read the rules or created a character, but a PDF of the rules will be provided for those that like to get ahead. This is a learn to play campaign for a reason, and I'm excited to teach you the game!

What Magpie brings to the table

You'll have access to all the Foundry Virtual Tabletop content around The Wildsea, including access to the source material in PDF for easier viewing. I will also be adding custom maps, tokens, and music into the VTT (if you're anti-music during your RPGs, you can turn it off!), and do character voices where appropriate. I will stick as closely to the rules as I can, but the fiction comes first. As we're all learning the system together, I will be quick to lean on the rules and gently remind players of the rules when things come up, but that doesn't mean we're stuck to them. We can always flash-back, rewind, or overrule previous decisions to better fit the story we're telling as a group. I often make my own rules or homebrew content where there are gaps, as well.

Safety

How Magpie creates a safe table

Before the session zero (or upon joining the campaign), you will receive a link to a Lines and Veil survey that includes the Monte Cook RPG Consent Checklist so that I can get explicit consent around what things to include in the campaign. Some themes are inherent to the game system, but I will do my best to accommodate any requests to remove or otherwise limit the screen-time of problematic content. In the session zero, we will go over the safety tools in full and then begin character and crew creation. My safety tools are mostly digital, but any physical or digital use of any discussed safety tool (X-card, breaks, etc.) will be honored. I have an open-door policy with my games and will take a break around halfway through (or earlier, if necessary) to accommodate bio-breaks and intense scenes.
