About the adventure

Lockwood Manor is an abandoned Victorian-style estate in the Appalachian mountains, about a 30 minute drive northwest of Asheville, North Carolina. No one really knows who built the place or why portals to supernatural mysteries randomly appear inside it, but the utilities always work and food appears in the cabinets, so living there isn't that bad as long as you solve a mystery every so often. Sure, the supernatural is dangerous, but you're probably a bit supernatural yourselves, so it isn't all bad. And hey, anything beats paying rent. This campaign is a monster of the week style campaign based on stories like Supernatural, X-Files, The Librarians, the Spiderwick Chronicles, Practical Magic, Coraline, Paranorman, and Ghostbusters. It's set in the same world as the Horner Paranormal web series (which you can read about at https://hornerparanormal.com). Basically, the world is just our world, for the most part, except the supernatural is real and hidden by a rationalizing psychic force called the Veil. Paranormal folk and various types of magic exist, but not everyone knows they do, and revealing it to mundies may cause them to "snap" and turn into violent, supernatural-hating hunters. Because of that, it's best not to be obviously supernatural where non-acclimated folks can see. The game will mostly take place in the contiguous United States and be episodic in nature. Each session (or two) will involve solving a different supernatural mystery in a different location. You'll also be slowly uncovering the secrets of the Lockwood Manor itself throughout the campaign. We'll be using the Misfits & Mayhem system, which is an exploding dice pool system based on Kids on Bikes, Kids on Brooms, and Teens in Space. Sessions will be 3-4 hours long. Game rating is PG-13.

About me

Hi! I'm Kodi Gonzaga, a.k.a. jaztice, and I love playing narrative heavy, role-play heavy story games. I also design my own TTRPGs and write novels in my spare time. By day, I'm a project manager, so I've got all those organizational skills down pat, including the dreaded specter of scheduling. Telling stories and helping people feel heard, seen, and understood is one of my greatest passions in life, so I figured becoming a professional GM would be a good idea. We'll see if I was right!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done using the process detailed on pages 6 and 7 of the Misfits & Mayhem SRD, which is available to download for free at https://jaztice.itch.io/misfits-and-mayhem-srd. We'll handle character creation during the first session (a.k.a. our "session zero"), so don't worry if anything is confusing or you need help! Starting Skill Bonus Total: 25 Starting IP: 30 IP Awarded: 10 IP at the end of each Mystery/Adventure Optional Rule Sets Included: Assisting Others, Item Crafting, Social Networking, Weapons/Status/Armor, Downtime (maybe) Both print-out and digital character sheets are available via the Misfits & Mayhem PDF (the digital character sheets use Google Docs).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The primary way we'll communicate and play the game will be via Discord, so you'll need a Discord account. My server link is https://discord.gg/AxnsP6HhCQ. Once you're in the game, I'll set you up with a Lockwood Manor Mysteries Campaign role that will give you access to the appropriate channels on the server. Additionally, I'd highly suggest you use the digital character sheet I created, which means you'll need a Google Drive account and access to Google Documents. Finally, if we do end up needing maps for spatial awareness during fights, I'll probably just use OwlbearRodeo, which is free to use and doesn't require an account.

What Kodi Gonzaga brings to the table

My GM style is pretty story-focused and roleplay heavy, but it's also a monster of the week style game, so at least one intended combat will be included in each mystery. Also, I'm the kind of GM that builds a campaign around the PCs and tugs on those personal motivations with reckless abandon. I play games to tell compelling, interesting, and exciting stories. If you do too, then we'll mesh well at the table! Most of play will be theater of the mind, with the exception of any particularly complicated combat scenarios that we may use OwlbearRodeo for. I'm marking webcam as required because I like to see people's faces during play as a baseline, but you can always turn your camera off for whatever reason. I'd also suggest you get a set of polyhedral dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20) or find a good online dice roller you like to use.

Safety

How Kodi Gonzaga creates a safe table

Safety tools I'll be using include: C.A.T.S., Lines & Veils, X/N/O Cards (or just the Traffic Light System, whichever is easier), Open Door Policy, Debrief, and Stars and Wishes. Part of our first session ("session zero") will include going over these safety tools. Also, I personally GM better if I can see everyone's faces via webcam, and though it's not required, it is highly encouraged. I'll be on video either way! Unavoidable subject matter for this game includes violence, crime, murder, and supernatural entities. Other topics that are likely to arise include law enforcement agencies, supernatural bigotry, real-world history, trauma, and more. Anything I think is likely to happen, even just off-screen or in backstories, is listed in the Content Warnings. However, almost everything is negotiable, and all sensitive topics will be treated with respect from me (and I expect my players to treat them with respect as well). IMPORTANTLY, this GM is and will always strive to be safe for queers (including trans folks), POCs, people with disabilities both physical and mental, abuse survivors, disenfranchised groups, minorities, and anyone who isn't a bigot or a jerk. This game can and will delve into deep and personal topics, but as long as you communicate your needs and boundaries, I will do my very best to address those needs and stick to those boundaries. No Zionists. No TERFs. No Trump supporters. Fuck ICE. Just don't be a jerk and do your best to communicate if you need anything, and we'll get along fine.
