About the adventure

Orlane, once a small village where everyone knew each other and nothing happened. Now it is gripped by fear. Rumors abound as outsiders are shunned and the town slowly goes to ruin. Some flee in terror, abandoning their homes and farms, while others disappear. No one knows the cause and those that remain are tight lipped. No clues can be found as a shadowy curtain falls upon this once thriving plane. Those that have fled and families of those that remain desperately seek help to discover what has happened to their home and loved ones. Will you answer the call? Can you solve the mystery and turn the tide of darkness in this land? Welcome to Against the Cult of the Reptile God, a classic adventure from the Advanced Dungeon and Dragons days of tabletop games. Rebuilt and re-imagined for 2024 5th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons, this game can introduce veterans and new players alike to this classic adventure. Even if you played the adventure before, you're welcome to come back to once again save the village of Orlane. With multiple paths to take you to the end, its never the same adventure twice! Going from level 1 to 4, this game is for people who enjoy a more sandbox approach as it has multiple ways to move forward once the plot gets going. Moments of roleplay, combat, and old fashion dungeon delving can be expected and are encouraged. Death of characters is, as always, possible. But, even in the case of a total party kill, who is to say that's the end?

About me

Hey, my name is James and I'm a lifelong nerd with over 5 years of ttrpg experience. I started out as a 5e player but have since played Call of Cthulu and Pathfinder 2e as well. I've been GMing my own games for some time, with several one shots and a couple of long term campaigns under my belt. I'm the type of GM who's most happy when my players are having fun. I love it when people walk away from game night and immediately want to share what happened with someone. I consider myself flexible, able to run a difficult meat grinding dungeon as much as I am a chill game with jokes and monster of the week. Everyone's fun and comfort are my utmost priority.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will start at level 1. Stats may either be determined via rolling 4d6 and dropping the lowest for each stat. If a stat ends up lower than 8 then it may be rolled again. If a player is unsatisfied with their rolls then they may replace it with the Standard Array. There are no restrictions on spells, race, class, subclass, etc. Any Official source from the 2014 edition is ok and will be available through Foundry. Third Party and homebrew sources will be discussed at Session Zero. Optimization and "minmaxing" are allowed but recommended on a whole party basis.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

An account on Discord is required. A link to the discord server will be made available. The Foundry Server link will be made available at Session Zero.

What James brings to the table

As a GM, I bring a more relaxed style with focus on fun. While I don't lean fully into "Rule of Cool", I do bend them at times to let the players shine. I am practiced in voices and some impressions, though not at a professional level. I provide help with building the characters and involve the players in how campaign evolve. I enjoy borrowing from backstories and let them inform the story. A solid backstory can even change the DC of a roll in my games. I am fair and put my players fun and comfort at the forefront. If something bothers players, I bring understanding and will change it. The only follow up questions will be how to avoid the situation going forward. While I cannot provide romance or sexual interactions between player character or NPCs, I do not ban them between players, I can facilitate them if requested, however any explicit sexual activities fade to black.

Homebrew rules

If players opt for homebrew rules, here are mine: Free feat at Level 1. This must be from the 2014 5th edition Healing potions drank as a full action heal the maximum amount. Healing potions can be consumed as a bonus action for the normal rolled amount of healing. Drawing or stowing weapons can be used as part of the Attack Action As part of the Dual Wielder feat, the second weapon attack may be used as part of the attack action rather than the bonus action. Warlocks may choose between Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as their spell casting stat. However, it must be stated in the backstory how this lead to their pact. Examples: negotiating a pact (Charisma), researching eldritch rituals (Intelligence), heightened spiritual awareness (Wisdom). Warlocks also gain an additional spell slot at level 1. Additional rules suggested by players may be considered. The above rules need not all be included in the same game.

Safety

How James creates a safe table

A consent checklist will be provided for anonymous reporting of lines, veils, and consent. The end result will be provided at the end as part of a living document formed at Session Zero. The link to the document will be available in the discord server for all to view. I maintain an open door and my games are to be approached with an open mind. Anyone may request a break should a unknown trigger occur. We can also plan regular physical breaks to stretch and move as needed. If a session is rough or just unfun we can dissect it and examine it after session and between session so the game may be course corrected. If things really spiral, we establish a new Session Zero to examine how lines and veils relate to the campaign. This can also occur if the players wish it, even whent he campaign is going well.
