About the adventure

Played in the beta of Tales of the Assemblance, with access to that beta given to participants, this tale is a mystery that explores strange goings on in a small town and the area around it at the request of an emissary the Prefectorum. This will be an introduction to a new system for all players, and will be limited to lower levels with help for players as you get to grips with the system with as much assistance as needed, and while TTRPG experience to some degree is encouraged, it is not a prerequisite, it simply makes the learning slightly easier for you. The setting will be in the official ToA setting, Erumos, with all that it entails, but no familiarity with the setting from the players is expected, nor even possible. The setting has elements of classic fantasy, but is a world rife with brutality and struggle, with fewer magical methods employed than might be seen in most fantasy settings. The era is similar to the 15th century here on earth, with heavy plate and early firearms appearing in the world, but bows, crossbows and weapons from earlier eras are just as, if not more, common. Players will have the option to be spellcasters, alchemists, druids and warriors, or any combination thereof, in a system without classes which gives a large degree of control over your character design and development. Ideally, most of the time will be spent in character, with mechanical questions OOC answered where needed and with a helping hand from me as your GM. Given time to get to terms with your character, this new world and the system, you will find the darker elements of the world and situation revealed to you. Though this is part of ToA's beta, the game is well over a year into playtesting, and the system's teeth are cut, so you need not be concerned that you are doing initial testing, that has been undertaken already.

About me

I'm Tom, I'm a professional actor and TTRPG designer, who started as a GM as a way to support game development and testing, and continued afterwards for the love of the game. MY GM style focuses on dark fantasy at the lower end of the fantasy spectrum, leaning away from tales of the birth and death of gods and instead focusing on fighting everyday, pervasive evils.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation will take place in Session Zero, and if incomplete by the end in the time between zero and session one. Stats are decided using the system's rules, which only has one approach to stats. Taking a complete RAW approach to character creation, though homebrew elements might come up in a minor capacity, e.g. a basic weapon type, which you may request and I will make if it seems more appropriate than simply flavour to an existing one. You starting level will be 1.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Discord account and Roll20 account, and both a discord server and a Roll20 campaign to join, as Roll20 will be used only for battle maps. I will also provide digital character sheets for you to use, shared via google drive, so a way to access that.

What Tom of the Assemblance brings to the table

Character voices will be present for all NPCs, for music I utilise Fantasy+ to provide musical background and occasional ambient sounds. I stick to embracing character led story, and will adapt things as time progresses to suit the characters at hand, both PCs and NPCs, so the plot may shift. You will be afforded plenty of opportunities for inter-party roleplay, as well as conversations individually and as a group with various NPCs. For rules I stick firmly to the RAW, as the system is of my own design, but that includes GM rulings being flexible where appropriate. Where there is a rules misunderstanding, I will often allow a player to not do something if they misunderstood how it works. Though played digitally, you are welcome to roll your own dice physically or to roll digitally in roll20.

Safety

How Tom of the Assemblance creates a safe table

Lines and Veils will be discussed at session zero, which will be robust. Anyone who is not comfortable openly discussing any lines or veils may message me privately and I will bring those to the session anonymously. Anyone who wishes to add a line or veil down the line may speak to me to do so at any point, and I will endeavour to facilitate that. If at any point someone is uncomfortable, they may visually or vocally express this and play will stop, but they may also simply leave the chat and message, or message me to have the same effect. Breaks may be requested if someone needs a moment to process, and I will also position breaks to allow players a breather following especially emotional or impactful events.
