About the adventure

For generations, the dwarves of Kal Kalavar, the Hanging City, have held a reputation of honor and steadfastness. Renowned for their technological prowess, they brought wonders of stone and metalwork to the people of Vasloria, sharing a vision of progress and prosperity. But ever since the death of Vasloria’s king, the dwarves have withdrawn from the world. Ten years later, and there are few who still speak of the majesty of the fabled Hanging City. Now, travelers only tell of the cold, silent mountains, the Gates of Evening closed to outsiders. And yet, recently, there have been sightings of small, well-armed bands of dwarves prowling the countryside. What’s more, a string of disappearances seems to accompany these sightings. The people are demanding answers, demanding to have their loved ones returned to them. Will you answer the call and get to the bottom of this? Greetings heroes! ‘Pressed for Time’ is a Level 1 one-shot for Draw Steel with one simple goal: find and rescue the missing villagers. Our story begins in media res, as your party is investigating one of the missing villagers’ last known whereabouts, about to make a breakthrough. From there, you heroes will have to contend with villagers’ captors, track them across rugged and monster-infested terrain, and contend with the wounded pride of the dwarves. This one-shot is beginner friendly, though it is recommended that you have played Draw Steel at least once before. I’m happy to answer any questions about the rules before and during the session, as long as we can keep the game moving at a good pace! Players can expect a little of each of the core Draw Steel systems: a montage test, a negotiation, and plenty of cinematic, tactical, heroic combat!

About me

Hey everybody! You can call me Zee and I've been running TTRPGs for over a decade now. I first started playing TTRPGs back in high school when a friend invited me to play D&D 4th edition, and I immediately fell in love. 'You mean to say I can BE that ferocious beast-man with a giant sword who fights demons on Tuesdays and slays dragons on the weekends!? Sign me up!' But it didn't stop there. Before long, I got the craving to run my own game, to weave tales of villainy and heroism, to craft my own worlds, big and small, for my friends to explore and save! More than 10 years later and I've played and run games in many different systems (VtM, SW-Edge of the Empire, Starfinder, etc.), but D&D 5e has remained my bread and butter for most of that time. Lately though, I've been very excited to dive deeper into Draw Steel and Daggerheart! Last thing to mention is that I value communication and respect at my table. I work with safety tools to ensure that everyone is comfortable and has a good time. If you cannot show basic respect and kindness towards me or the other players at the table, then this is not the space for you. With all that said, I hope to see you on our next adventure!

Character creation

Creating your character

Before the session begins, you should have a Level 1 hero ready to go. You’re free to either create your own using the Draw Steel rules, or use one of the pregenerated characters (PDFs for which I can provide). If you create your own character, you may take a Complication as long as you run it by me first, as some include features that don’t make sense for a one-shot. At the start of this one-shot, your character will have 0 Victories and their maximum amount of recoveries. In addition, you can give your character 135 project points, which you can use to craft various treasures before the events of this one-shot. This is in addition to any project points you gain from your career. You have the project sources and prerequisites for your choice of either two 1st-Echelon Consumables or one 1st-Echelon Trinket. If you are a returning player from one of my other games, you may use a character from those games of the appropriate level, along with any Treasures or Titles you have acquired. Instead of the prior guidelines, you gain 100 project points in addition to any you have already, and can select one project source and prerequisite to have acquired before the events of this one-shot (1st-Echelon Consumables and Trinkets only). If you are not familiar with any of the rules mentioned above or have questions, I am happy to help with any part of the process (time permitting).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Aside from character creation, you will need an account for Discord, which will be used for communications leading up to the session and voice call during it. When you sign up, you'll receive an email/message with the link to the Discord server. It will also have channels with information and resources you can look over but these are in no way required materials. The second thing you'll need is an account on Owlbear Rodeo as this is the VTT we'll be using.

What Zee brings to the table

I can provide PDFs for pregenerated character, as mentioned under Character Creation. I can also create a token for your character if you find an image that captures what you imagine your hero looks like. Just send me the image and I’ll make the token As far as my style of running the game, I typically try to provide a fairly immersive experience with in-character voices and detailed descriptions, while still keeping things light above table. I do ascribe to the rule of cool, though with Draw Steel still being a fairly new system and the different levels of experience players may have, I will be sticking to the rules as much as possible. Draw Steel is intended to be fairly tactical, but my goal here is not to overwhelm anyone, much less kill your character. I’ll also be playing ambient music and audio tracks to help immerse you into the world of the game.

Safety

How Zee creates a safe table

When you sign up, you will immediately receive a message/email with a link to a Google Form, which will be a checklist of Lines and Veils on topics that might pop up in this one-shot. There will also be space for you to list any of your own boundaries in case there are topics you don't want to see that I have not listed. There will be an Open Door policy during the session, meaning any player can step away, disconnect from the call, etc. and rejoin at any time without judgement. If you need to do so for your own safety and well-being, please do so. I will not tolerate any player harassing another should they choose to use this policy. Finally, at the end of the session, we will do a quick wrap up where players are free to talk about the session and offer feedback for me. I’m open to any constructive criticism, and I hope to hear if there’s anything you really liked so I know what to focus on in future games.
