About the adventure

The City of Antiquity is the lair of the Black Greatwyrm; Sable. A dragon and collector of architecture from fallen kingdoms of The Old World, who arranges them into his metropolis, or - more accurately - Gotham. Aristocracies and their old money were relocated along with their estates to this dour swampland canal city enveloped by pervasive fog and ennui. With their great wealth and treasures, old money interests bought the government and set rents for the working class. The only option for the destitute is to live outside the city limits and commute in to reap the benefits of modern means. Over time, a shanty town came to be, built of boardwalks over the swamp, at the Bog Bottom of the economic and literal ecosystem. A wall was built between Antiquity and Bog Bottom to exclude the wretched and squalid from the prosperity of The New World. A single entry gate allows outsiders into the city to work and spend their hard-earned gold, but closes every night at 17:00 until 5:00 the next morning. Anybody trapped inside the city best find (price-gouging) accommodations; the Antiquity Police Department is authorized to arrest unhoused individuals. You grew up in the shadow of Antiquity and have partied up to protect yourselves from each other. These local gangs vary from altruistic to opportunistic but have always gotten rough in their turf wars. That is, until recently, when a tiefling from the city of the Red Greatwyrm came to town. Pin the Red has risen to power as a great leader, but he lifts up his fellow folk instead of forcing his opponents to their knees. In the last few months, his speaking truth to power established a tentative truce in Bog Bottom. For Pin’s work toward community building - businesses, schools, and food for the masses - the people have taken to calling him “King”. The APD cannot abide a King Pin such as him. They’ve been informed of the Red’s plans; to unify all of Bog Bottom’s gangs under one banner and change the balance of power between their community and the city. The APD have formulated their plan in response - to put an end to Bog Bottom and its dissident element once and for all…

About me

A dungeon master for 14 years among friends, I started playing on a D20 system modified to run a Mass Effect game before getting into mainstream D&D. I followed the game from 3.5e through 4th edition and into 5th edition. Until it closed, I would volunteer to run beginner's sessions at Meltdown Comics. I'm a lifelong sci-fi, fantasy, and comic book geek. A deep well of pop culture knowledge. New players are my favorites - they can't be constrained by rules they don't know - but I've seen players I introduced to the game master the rules and reach 20th level. I like action and comedy, drama and intrigue, wonder and surprises. GMing is my favorite activity, I wish I could make money doing it - oh wait!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be creating level 2 characters before the session begins using D&D Beyond - a link will be provided. Please aim to keep your character within the 2024 ruleset. Use the standard array for your abilities. You may also choose for your character two common magic items, and one uncommon 3rd-level spellwrought tattoo (though we can cover the tattoo within the session).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A microphone, discord account, and D&D Beyond access are necessary to join the game. A webcam helps, but isn't required. If you do not have a character created ahead of time, I will have options available to use, but we will not spend time making new characters during this campaign.

What John brings to the table

An urban dungeon crawl experience that blends tactical combat, exploration, and narrative. A balance between Rule of Cool and Rules as Written. Mystery. Conspiracy. Strategy. Discovery. Strong characters and a campaign-inspired playlist.

Homebrew rules

Spellwrought Tattoos do not vanish when used once, they recharge with a long rest like one dedicated spell slot. I utilize a "Clash" mechanic whenever a check meets another creature's AC or DC exactly. Both creatures roll off with individual flat ability checks. The winner decides the success or failure of the original roll.

Safety

How John creates a safe table

Expect a link to a Lines and Veils doc where you can outline for me your limits in the game, though I do err on the side of a PG-13 rating. Aftercare also includes Stars and Wishes. It's a collaborative medium and feedback means everything.
