About the adventure

STAR TREK: RANGER is a character-driven campaign set in the early 2270s, just after the end of the Original Series. Bridging the gap between the TV and movie eras, the series follows the crew of the USS Ranger, a (non-canon) Constitution Class straship under the command of Capt. Katarina Hassan, a former violin prodigy who left the concert stage behind in favor of a larger and infinitely more dangerous venue: deep space. Players take on the roles of senior officers aboard Ranger as they explore long-lost ruins, meet strange alien cultures, and occasionally do battle against opponents both familiar and new. No prior RPG experience or in-depth Star Trek knowledge is needed. Current players range in age from 40s through 60s, though we're open to fun, good-humored folks of any variety! We are very casual gamers; a good story and friendly vibes are always the top priority.

About me

From the depths of dungeons to the far reaches of space, I've been playing and running RPGs since sometime in the last millennium, and even though my own first session of D&D was a long time ago, I still remember it like it was yesterday. That's one of the things I enjoy most about this hobby--introducing new players to it! My approach to GMing is pretty laid-back. While it's important to be consistent and fair, I'm not a stickler for rules; if a player wants to try something odd or untested, I'm almost always going to let them. Likewise, I'd much rather spend our time telling cool stories together than looking up obscure rules in a manual. For me, it's all about maintaining the pace of the story, keeping everyone involved, and creating thrilling / funny / heartbreaking moments that will live on long after the dice are put away. My top three favorite games are Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Eden Studios), Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium), and the old Marvel Super Heroes game from the 80s (TSR). That said, I also love The One Ring, D&D, and the "retro-clone" Basic Fantasy RPG. A few personal details to help you decide if we'd be a good fit: - Outside of the game room, I'm a musician (singer/songwriter), recording engineer, and record producer. - Before I became a full-time musician/producer, I was a college English (writing) professor. - I tend to run more story-driven games as opposed to tactical combat-driven ones. That's because 1) I like that style better and 2) I'm Really Bad at Math. - I love playing with diverse groups of people and am a big proponent of bringing more women and People of Color into the hobby. - I have several parrots who may drop in to "help" from time to time. Feel free to ask any questions!

Character creation

Creating your character

Players can use the official STA character creation website at https://sta.bcholmes.org/ We use the Star Trek Adventures 2nd Edition Core Book. This is an ongoing, existing campaign, so simply reach out to me (the GM) and I'll help get you started! The game session is run on Google Meet (for the video chat portion) and on my private Foundry server for the tabletop elements.

The current party

We currently have: - Vocnard (played by Rob): Vulcan science officer - Dr. Rockford (Amanda): human chief medical officer - Alimek (Penny): "Vulcan" (actually a Federation-born Romulan) acting chief engineer - Vlad Johannsen (Kendall): Andorian operations chief and acting helmsman - Astra Scott (Pamela): human communications officer (and niece of "Scotty") Crew Needs: Play what/who you want, but the gaps that we currently have are... - security chief and security officers - additional science personnel (including xenoanthropology, archaeology, etc) - helmsman / navigator - additional medical personnel If any of those sound interesting, let me know!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Just make sure you have a relatively fast and stable internet connection and a quiet place to play. You shouldn't need any special software or other supplies.

What Gabriel brings to the table

I'm a very laid-back GM and definitely prioritize Having A Good Time and Creating Cool Experiences over strict rules and tedious technical details. I run the game on my personal Foundry server where I have custom maps, player handouts, sound effects, and more.

Safety

How Gabriel creates a safe table

This is Star Trek. Therefore it presents a much more enlightened society than the one we currently live in. Characters are members of Starfleet and endeavor to uphold the highest ideals of honor, cultural awareness, and dedication to the organization and to each other. I sincerely doubt anyone will find objectionable topics at the table, but if that happens, I am always happy to hit <<pause>> and talk, take a break, or shift gears. All you need to do is speak up or send a private chat message.
