About the adventure

One of the most iconic adventures in TTRPG history, with a distinctly modern twist! You'll be battling your way through The Keep on the Borderlands adventure module; down into The Caves of Chaos but in a decidedly new-school system: Daggerheart. This will be a 10-shot dungeoncrawl: our (mostly) brave heroes will need to find their way through the notorious Caves of Chaos - fighting deadly creatures and deadlier traps, navigating the vaults, caves and tunnels to uncover a dark secret within. I've completely reworked the environments and adversaries from the original module for the Daggerheart system, re-skinning, re-speccing, and setting things up for a hells of a fight. Daggerheart's more narrative focus than D&D will provide a counterpoint to the combat: who are you when you're so far from the light of day? How will you and your friends help each other stay alive? What will you do when treasures greater than gold glitter so invitingly... will you resist temptation? From the module introduction: A flock of ravens rise croaking from the ground, the beat of their wings and their cries magnified by the terrain to sound loud and horrible. Amongst the litter of rubble, boulders, and dead wood scattered about on the ravine floor, you can see bits of gleaming ivory and white - closer inspection reveals that these are bones and skulls of men, animals, and other things... You know that you have certainly discovered the Caves Of Chaos.

About me

I'm a DM/GM who specialises in the narrative / and story focussed aspects of TTRPGs. I've run loads of systems and enjoy the mechanics, but where roleplaying games really shine and create experiences you don't find in any other medium is in the emergent collaborative stories that we get to tell together. With that in mind, when running published modules I'm always looking to make the game personal to the PCs. In Curse of Strahd, it's fine that our gloomy vampire friend will hate any adventures who try and topple him... but it's much more fun (and memorable!) when Strahd hates YOU! I'm happy running all sorts of systems, D&D 5E is the one I'm most experienced in, but I don't claim to have a true depth to my knowledge of the system - if we come across something I don't have an answer to, I prefer a quick ruling that feels fair, and then we get on with the story. My games won't be for you if you elevate the rules and mechanics over the story that we get to tell together. Having said that, I don't fudge dice - the story of ALMOST defeating the BBEG but dying heroically is just as good as the one where the heroes win the day. I'm also an improv comedian so I'm very used to thinking on my feet, making sure that I've got something for any situation, regardless of how off-the-rails my players plans get! For the curious, I also have a YouTube channel called Renegade Rolls where I share DM/GM advice, and an Actual Play channel where you can see me in action!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done in-session. This will likely take the first hour of the first session, but can be revisited and refined at any time. We'll use Classes and Domains from the Daggerheart Core Rules (none of the Void Classes!) All Classes, Communities, Heritages & Domains are allowed, and should need minimal reflavouring for the setting. All Player Characters will be residents of The Keep: either new arrivals or long-term residents. Your Player Characters will also all have connections to each other (established in-game). Some questions to ponder: - What is the name of your master to whom your Player Character is squire / acolyte / apprentice / trainee? - Why is your Player Character not yet ready to take on the full title of their profession? You're welcome to come up with a full character concept ahead of the game, but PLEASE don't overthink it. My preference is for the group to come up with characters together in the first session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Discord (link available once you sign up) Foundry VTT (link available once you sign up) Demiplane is easiest for character creation (but offline sheets or pen/paper is totally fine too) Note that I prefer players to have webcams turned on whenever possible. I'm happy to do quick tech tests with you ahead of the session to make sure everything works smoothly. We won't be using any advanced features in Foundry VTT. As long as you're able to navigate the interface + map and move your character token around, we'll be fine.

What Rich - Renegade Rolls brings to the table

I'll take you through character creation, explain the rules for any Daggerheart newbies (who are very welcome!), and get you all set for adventures. Combat will be mostly tactical gridded combat, with occasional theatre of the mind combat encounters. Daggerheart prides itself on being a bit loose with the interpretation of ranges and distances, but it does provide optional rules which we'll use for playing with the gridded map: Melee 5 ft = 1 square Very Close 15 ft = 3 squares Close 30 ft = 6 squares Far 60 ft = 12 squares Very far > 60 ft = > 12 squares In narrative / roleplay moments, my GM style is all about improv and reacting to whatever the characters do, while keeping a handle on things to make sure everything fits within the fiction that we've established. I personally very much enjoy finding different voices for my NPCs. When you're in character, you're welcome to speak as you normally would... but if you want to do a sneaky goblin voice, I'll encourage it wholeheartedly! I like to move the spotlight around, and will use improv style "editing" to keep things snappy. If a scene is dragging, I'll literally say "and scene!" or "we cut to" and we'll jump to the next thing. The game will include optional ambient music in Discord. The volume can be set and turned on / off by you at any time, and won't impact the core experience of the game.

Homebrew rules

We'll be playing Rules-As-Written, with the optional rules for distances in gridded combat but GM interpretations and The Rule Of Cool will always come first. A rules intro / reminder will be part of the pre-game.

Safety

How Rich - Renegade Rolls creates a safe table

Once we're all online, we'll start the session with Housekeeping, Player Intros and discussion on Safety Tools. The scenario will feature fantasy violence and death. I intend to veil over gratuitous details of killing, and I'll be using X Card / Pause for a Second myself liberally. My preference is for everyone to do this via audio: saying "X Card" or "Pause for a Second" but I'll also have my messages open if anyone prefers to share via a text message. We'll take time at the end of each session for a Debriefing as well as sharing Stars & Wishes.
