About the adventure

The world is held together by ancient elemental Crystals, relics of a forgotten age that quietly sustain the balance of the elements. Now, those Crystals are beginning to fail. As magic wanes and the sky itself shows signs of fracture, rumors spread of an ancient seal weakening and a darkness long thought banished stirring once more. When fate draws a handful of unlikely heroes together, a journey begins that will span continents, uncover lost worlds, and challenge what it truly means to be a hero. This campaign is inspired by classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana. Expect a high-fantasy adventure filled with colorful locations, memorable villains, dramatic reveals, and moments of heartfelt character growth. The tone balances epic stakes with wonder, camaraderie, and occasional levity—heroes laugh, argue, fail, and rise again. While the story echoes familiar JRPG themes, player choices will shape the world and determine how the legend is told. The game uses Fabula Ultima, a narrative-forward system designed to feel like playing through a console RPG. Characters are highly customizable, combat is cinematic and fast-paced, and storytelling is shared between GM and players. New to Fabula Ultima? That’s perfectly fine—this game is new-player friendly, and I’ll guide you through character creation, rules, and play as we go. This game is for players who enjoy collaborative storytelling, strong character arcs, and leaning into the drama of heroic fantasy. If you like rolling with the punches, embracing failure as part of the story, and exploring a system that many tables don’t get the chance to try, you’ll feel right at home here. Come ready to help build the world, support your fellow heroes, and discover what happens when the Crystals begin to fall.

About me

Hello! My name is Michael, I'm 35, I live in Chicago, and I have been playing Dungeons & Dragons since the AD&D days (DMing for 19 years). When I am not performing on the stage I am DMing for groups of players from all over the world. I have been playing D&D5E since the beginning (2014) and love the system. I have hosted over a thousand sessions and have more than 16,000 hours of experience with online table top gaming. I'm down for meeting new people, exploring vast dungeons, slaying monsters, and saving the multiverse, one plane of existence at a time.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation for this campaign is collaborative, guided, and new-player friendly. We will handle the majority of character creation before the first session, with a short Session 0 (or one-on-one check-in) to finalize details, answer questions, and tie characters into the world and each other. Characters will be created using the Fabula Ultima Core Rulebook. No additional supplements are required unless approved in advance. I’m happy to help you choose Classes, Skills, and Bonds that fit both your concept and the tone of the campaign—especially if this is your first time playing Fabula Ultima. All characters will begin at Level 5, representing competent adventurers at the start of their journey (similar to early-game JRPG heroes who already have a few jobs and abilities unlocked). Attributes, Skills, and other character options will be selected following the standard rules in the book—no rolling for stats. Characters will be created digitally using official Fabula Ultima character sheets (PDF or online tools), and we’ll coordinate over Discord to review and finalize everything. You’re encouraged to bring a loose concept or archetype rather than a fully locked-in build—Fabula Ultima shines when characters grow and evolve through play. Most importantly, character creation will emphasize story, bonds, and shared history. Expect to collaborate with other players to establish relationships, past connections, and personal goals. Your character isn’t just a stat block—they’re a hero with something to lose, something to protect, and a reason to stand when the world begins to fall apart.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Preparation Before your first session, there are just a few simple steps to get ready to play: Join the Discord Server Discord will be our primary hub for voice chat, announcements, handouts, and out-of-session communication. A working microphone and a reasonably quiet space are recommended. Foundry VTT Access We will use Foundry Virtual Tabletop for maps, tokens, dice rolls, and combat. You do not need to purchase Foundry—access is provided through your web browser. I’ll send a link before the first session so you can test your connection. Device & Browser A desktop or laptop computer is strongly recommended. Please use an up-to-date browser such as Chrome or Firefox for the best Foundry experience. Character Creation Characters will be created before Session 1 using the Fabula Ultima rules. We’ll coordinate over Discord to build and review characters together, especially for players new to the system. Read the Basics (Optional but Helpful) No deep rules knowledge is required, but a basic familiarity with the Fabula Ultima core concepts (attributes, bonds, and actions) will help the first session run smoothly. I’ll provide summaries and guidance as needed. Be Ready to Collaborate Come prepared with a loose character concept and an open mindset. Fabula Ultima thrives on teamwork, character bonds, and shared storytelling—no lone wolves required. If you can complete these steps, you’ll be ready to jump into a crystal-bound adventure full of heroic moments, dramatic turns, and classic JRPG vibes.

What Michael brings to the table

I aim to deliver a cinematic, character-driven JRPG experience that feels like playing through a classic console RPG together. You can expect a rich, living world filled with memorable NPCs, dramatic story beats, and meaningful choices that shape the adventure. I focus heavily on character arcs, bonds, and personal stakes, making sure every hero has moments to shine. I use Foundry VTT to provide clean, readable battle maps, visual handouts, and smooth combat flow, along with Discord voice for clear communication. I also incorporate ambient music and thematic tracks to enhance exploration, combat, and emotional moments. While I don’t do full theatrical performances, I do use light character voices and distinct speech patterns to help NPCs feel unique and memorable. Combat is fast-paced and cinematic rather than crunchy or overly tactical. Positioning and teamwork matter, but the focus is on dramatic moments, clever ideas, and stylish actions. I favor Rules as Intended with a strong appreciation for the Rule of Cool, especially when a creative choice enhances the story or fits the tone of a JRPG moment. Most importantly, I strive to create a welcoming, respectful table where collaboration is key. I encourage player creativity, shared worldbuilding, and open communication. My goal is for everyone to feel comfortable taking narrative risks, leaning into roleplay, and enjoying both triumphs and setbacks as part of a memorable shared story.

Safety

How Michael creates a safe table

Player safety and comfort are a top priority at my table. I want this game to be a space where everyone can engage fully with the story while knowing their boundaries will always be respected. Before the game begins, I will share a Lines & Veils document for players to review and add to anonymously or directly, whichever they prefer. We will also cover expectations, tone, and content boundaries during Session 0, including themes that may appear in the campaign and how we handle difficult or intense moments. During play, we will use X, N, & O safety tools, which can be used digitally (via Discord messages or reactions) or spoken at the table—no explanations required in the moment. If something needs to change or stop, we’ll adjust immediately and move forward without judgment or disruption. After intense scenes or sessions, I make space for aftercare and check-ins, either briefly at the end of the session or privately via message. Players are always welcome to reach out between sessions if something didn’t sit right or if boundaries need to be updated. Safety tools are living tools and can be revised at any time. Above all, this is a collaborative, respectful table. We aim for dramatic storytelling and emotional moments, but never at the expense of player comfort. Communication is open, consent matters, and everyone deserves to feel safe while exploring heroic fantasy together.
