About the adventure

Meta-background: this campaign is based on the adventure path originally published in dragon magazine for 4e D&D. While I enjoy 5e D&D, I have recently been pretty intrigued by the depth and breadth of character types offered by Pathfinder 2e (remastered). Play style: classic fantasy adventure that evolves into wartime heroics. Tropes including dungeon crawling, rescue ops, ambushes, and uncovering mysteries. Meaningful choices: which fronts to save, which factions to back, and how far to push into enemy territory. Who is this for: Players of any experience. If you like tactical combat and solving puzzles, this is for you. Good guys who want to vanquish the bad guys. Who is this NOT for: A) Those who rarely engage in combat and want the bulk of the game to be roleplaying. I like roleplaying, but I have the most fun in the more video-gamey bits (combat, tactics, puzzles). B) Anti-heroes, undesirables, greedy, hedonistic, etc... characters. Those are fun characters to play, but I do not like them in my games and they do not fit the tone.

About me

I have been playing TTRPGs since 1997. I am a former engineering professor. As such, teaching, integrated systems, and the math are my favorite parts of playing. I master the complicated bits, so you do not have to. I am intimately familiar with D&D (all editions) and HERO. I am also very knowledgeable in Pathfinder. I have been digging into Daggerheart and Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players start at 1st level. I am ok with you making your own characters as long as it is all material published by Paizo. I will "approve" it in the end to make sure it fits in the story. However, I will also make a large suite of characters. For newer players, I will provide "probing" questions to narrow down the best fit for your image of your character. If you want to alter a pre-defined character, I am ok with that. Maybe you want a Dwarf versus an Elf? That's ok. Also, character aesthetics and background are yours to develop. If you want to play a big burly but confident beast of a woman, go for it. I once played an elf modeled after a Viking Norseman. We will flesh out characters (by choosing, tweaking, etc...) in session 0.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I plan on using Discord for voice. I recommend head phones, but that is not necessary. You will obviously need a microphone, and I recommend playing in a room where there is not a ton going on in the background. I have two kids that fight a lot, but that is distracting during a game. As such, I task my wife with wrangling them in.

What Kevin Hadley brings to the table

Brand new to tabletop games? I will ease you into things, provide aids of all types, and minimize the learning curve. I used to be a professor, so I know how to make complex stuff approachable. Some find Pathfinder a bit too "mathy", but I streamline everything as much as possible. I REALLY like creative approaches. You want to swing from the chandelier to get across the room? While it may be unorthodox or impractical, I utilize my creativity to flesh out what happens. The game is lite on roleplaying, but not roleplaying void. I like my players to get into character, but not to fret if they are not theater majors. The point is to have fun. There are roleplaying encounters where you have to convince folks to follow you, motivate prisoners to indulge information, and lie to infiltrate the the ranks of the opposing forces. I will get into character and use voices (maybe not a huge variety though). I use the tools in maptools: lighting, shadows, line of site, macros, and character tokens.

Homebrew rules

I like incorporating cool features from other systems. This includes, but is not limited to advantage/disadvantage, skill challenges, and pushing rolls. However, this is all play by ear. If changes are complicating things or detracting from the fun, I am all for abandoning it.

Safety

How Kevin Hadley creates a safe table

You are good guys battling against the forces of evil. You may operate on the grey side of the law, but you would never kill or similar except out of self-defense of defense of the weak and innocent. Characters should have a level of moral flexibility, but be good at their core. Players will give me their Lines and Veils and we will go over those types of thing in session 0. I will handle after care through a google form to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves and to fine tune things for the best game possible. You can use your X, N, & O's via private nudge in the chat of maptools.
