Dungeons & Dragons: Welcome to Bramblewood!

Dungeons & Dragons: Welcome to Bramblewood!

The Village of Bramblewood is a lovely little hamlet alone in the woods. The people are nice. The cider is lovely. But who's doing all that screaming?

About the adventure

In Welcome to Bramblewood, players will learn the fundamentals of Dungeons & Dragons. This single session adventure introduces characters to a small village with a big problem. Using the traditional Three Pillars of Exploration, Social Interaction, and Combat, the party will discover that the problem they were hired to solve may not be the only issue facing this quiet little town. Whether you're new to D&D or a long time lover of the game, Welcome to Bramblewood has something to offer. Need something without a lot of moving parts while you figure out how all this works? No problem! Want to try out that new subclass you heard about? What better time? Got a multiclass build you're interested in? Bramblewood is in need of hearty adventurers, and small parties sometimes require people willing to tackle more than one role.

About me

I'm JD. I've been an avid player of TTRPGs since 1990, and have been running them since way back when. I have been using Roll20 since 2019, and have been a professional DM since 2022. I am a husband and father, with a background in live theater. I have taught literally hundreds of people to play a variety of games, and am looking forward to doing the same for you. In addition to Dungeons & Dragons 5e, I also run the 20th Anniversary Edition of White Wolf Game Studio's classic World of Darkness games, Scion 1st edition, Exalted 2nd edition, and several others available on request. Some of my games focus on mature themes. Some are more light-hearted, and are kid friendly (PUGMIRE is a great game for kids 10 and up!). Session 0 is always free, and is where a group will discuss the expectations of the group, and establish the tone of our games.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done using some minor house rules. We will be using a specialized Standard Array, and everyone will start with a free feat. I welcome unusual race and class combinations, but require that characters be created using only official WOTC published content. We will build characters together quickly (30-45 minutes) to build cohesion and synergy, then jump into the game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will use Discord for voice and Roll20 as our virtual tabletop. I have all of the assets you'll need to build your character. Just message me at JDtheST on Discord for the links.

What JDtheST brings to the table

I bring 35 years of gaming experience to the table. I am a dedicated storyteller. I use vivid language to set the scene. My NPCs are distinguished through their speech patterns, their tone of voice, and their mannerisms rather than through "funny voices." I've built this one-shot to engage players of every experience level. Combat is tactical. Exploration is detailed. And every interaction offers the opportunity to learn something about the world your character lives in... and yourself.

Homebrew rules

1. Healing potions ONLY may be consumed as a bonus action. If you spend a full action consuming a healing potion, it provides maximum healing. 2. A natural 1 or a natural 20 are always a miss or a hit in combat. They do not automatically succeed or fail outside combat. 3. A natural 1 in melee combat provokes an attack of opportunity. A natural 1 in ranged combat provokes a roll against the nearest ally's AC. A poorly directed arrow can strike a friend.

Safety

How JDtheST creates a safe table

Because this is a one shot adventure, we will not take the time for a full session zero. If there are particular triggering encounters you prefer not to face at the game table, please DM me to let me know before the session begins. Otherwise, this game is marked 18+. We're all adults. Act like it. Be respectful of one another, and of me. If we stray into territory that makes someone uncomfortable, we will cut away from it as soon as I am made aware of the issue.
