About the adventure

The classic Gothic horror themed Curse of Stradh in a more low magic, sword and sorcery style. Where magic is rare, chaotic, dangerous, and more often wielded by villains, rather than an universal tool. Magic is not an everyday occurrence. When it appears in combat, it is fearsome, often involving mind-affecting spells or dark rituals rather than flashy, common fireballs. A world that is Gritty, violent, dark morally grey, and adventurous, with mature themes. where the stakes are more focused on Personal (wealth, honour, survival, revenge) rather than the high fantasy epic world saving quests So if you are looking for a game where the party rely more on martial prowess, tactics and their whit more than on magic. this might be for you. Magic is still available for PC's but limited and less reliable. Half caster classes like hunter and paladins do exist. while full caster classes will be either non existent or limited. This will be decided on session 0 by the party. A low magic setting significantly affects both the gameplay and the world within your campaign. Importance of Non-Magical Skills ● Medicine Checks: Healing through medicine becomes crucial. Encourage players to invest in the Medicine skill and carry healer's kits. ● Herbalism and Alchemy: Creating poultices, remedies, and alchemical items gains prominence. ● Martial Skills: Combat relies more on physical prowess, tactics, and weapon mastery. ● Survival and Hunting: Gathering food, tracking, and wilderness survival might become essential skills. ● Tool Proficiencies: More emphasize on the use of tools like Thieves' Tools, Carpenter's Tools, and Smith's Tools. Magic exists but is rare, unpredictable, and often unreliable. Magical itemsare scarce, and spellcasting is challenging . Gameplay Adjustments: Spellcasting: Players can attempt to cast spells but must overcome the environment's resistance to magic. Material components: will be crucial for spellcasting. Gone is component purse and standard spellcasting focus. Some spellcasting fucuses might exist allowing spellcasting without components but at an increased difficulty Magic Items: Magical items require activation checks to function and may fail in low magic areas. Passive Magic: Ever-magical items (like permanent torches) simply do not function.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters on session 0 (free of Charge) and we will be using the 2014 rules with added houserules for low magic and mostly "humanish" races like, humans, half elves, half orcs, halflings, dwarves, Point buy or standard array for stats. everyone gets a free feat at level 1. Everyone will get some extra tool or skill proficiency A homebrew system for weapon techniques to ad a bit to the martial prowess. we will also decide on session 0 the level of low magic and if full caster classes should be fully removed or still available but with restrictions like you need to also multiclass into a non magical class. This i want to talk about on session 0 to hear input from the group before deciding

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You need a Discord and a account on Roll20 (free account works perfectly well) and a working mic so we can hear you

What DM Shaugnar brings to the table

I provide a darker grittier version Of Curse of Stradh with a bit of focus on horror. All in a low magic setting where magic is not an everyday occurrence. When it appears in combat, it is fearsome, often involving mind-affecting spells or dark rituals rather than flashy, common fireballs. Heroes typically do not use much magic themselves, relying on their physical prowess instead.

Homebrew rules

Low lever magic adjustments To fine-tune the level of magic in your campaign, we can select a category from 1 to 5, with each category representing a different intensity of magic suppression . The Five Categories of Low Magic 1. Category 1 (Slightly Low Magic): Magic is almost at normal levels. Spellcasting is generally reliable but may fail occasionally. 2. Category 2 (Moderately Low Magic): Magic is noticeably weakened. Spellcasting requires effort, and failures are more common. 3. Category 3 (Significantly Low Magic): Magic is rare and often unreliable. Spellcasters struggle to harness magical energies. 4. Category 4 (Extremely Low Magic): Magic is scarce and difficult to use. Most common folk may have never witnessed magic. 5. Category 5 (Near Zero Magic): Magic is almost nonexistent. Spellcasting is an arduous task with a high chance of failure. Spellcasting Mechanics in Low Magic Settings In a low magic environment, using magic intentionally requires overcoming the world's resistance to magic. This is represented by a Spellcasting Check. Spellcasting Checks ● When to Roll: Any time a character attempts to cast a spell or activate a magical effect intentionally. ● How to Roll: Roll a d20 and add your Spellcasting Ability Modifier and Proficiency Bonus. ○ Spellcasting Ability Modifier: Based on your class (e.g., Intelligence for Wizards, Wisdom for Clerics). ○ Proficiency Bonus: As per your character level. Spellcasting DC Calculation The Difficulty Class (DC) for casting a spell is calculated as follows: Spellcasting DC = 10 + (2 × Magic Category) + Spell Level ● Base DC: Starts at 10. ● Magic Category Modifier: Multiply the chosen Magic Category by 2. ● Spell Level: Add the level of the spell being cast. ○ Cantrips: Considered level 0 for this calculation. Example Calculation ● Scenario: Casting a 3rd-level spell in a Category 2 Low Magic world. ● Calculation: ○ Base DC: 10 ○ Magic Category Modifier: 2 × 2 = 4 ○ Spell Level: 3 ○ Total DC: 10 + 4 + 3 = 17 Outcome of the Roll ● Success: The spell is cast successfully. ● Failure: The spell fails, and the action is lost with no effect. ○ On a natural 1 the spell slot is wasted ○ On a natural 20 the spell is either casted as 1 level higher or it expends a spell slot of 1 level lower (no spell slot for a level 1 spell)
