About the adventure

Welcome to Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, a dark fantasy adventure set in a land locked in endless winter. The sun barely rises, the cold never lets up, and the people of the Dale are just trying to survive. Small, snowbound towns depend on one another while long-buried secrets, strange magic, and ancient threats begin to stir beneath the ice. This game focuses on atmosphere, mystery, and character-driven storytelling. You can expect a mix of exploration across frozen wilderness, roleplay-heavy scenes with memorable NPCs, and exciting combat when things go wrong. Choices matter here, and creative solutions are always welcome—there’s rarely just one “right” way forward. The table is friendly, collaborative, and beginner-welcoming, while still offering depth for experienced players. If you enjoy getting invested in your character, thinking strategically, and telling a great story together—with a balance of dark themes, humor, and teamwork—this game is likely a great fit for you.

About me

Hey there! I’m a Brooklyn-based animator with a lifelong love for storytelling, worldbuilding, and all things lore. Whether I’m sketching characters or spinning tales around the table, I live for that moment when every piece of a story clicks together like a perfect puzzle. I’ve been rolling dice and weaving adventures for years — the kind where laughter, chaos, and cinematic twists collide. If you’re into character-driven tales, epic mysteries, or just want a game where everyone feels part of something legendary, pull up a chair! Let’s tell a story together — one roll at a time.

Character creation

Creating your character

We’ll handle character creation during a Session 0, so there’s no pressure to come in with anything finished. We’ll talk through character ideas together, make sure everyone fits the tone of the game, and I’ll help you build your character step by step—new players are totally welcome. Characters will be built directly in Roll20, and I’ll take care of setting up sheets, tokens, macros, and other mechanics so everything runs smoothly. Official D&D 5e books are good to use, and if you have a specific idea or option in mind, we can go over it during Session 0. The goal is simple: fun, functional characters you’re excited to play.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Before the game, players should make sure they have accounts for Roll20 and Discord, as both will be used for playing and communication. Make sure Roll20 is set up with any necessary character sheets and that you can access the campaign link I’ll provide. It’s also a good idea to have Discord installed and notifications enabled so you can stay in the loop for session updates, announcements, and chat between sessions. That’s really all you need—just bring your character ideas and a sense of adventure!

What Johnathan Marrero brings to the table

I’ll handle all the Roll20 setup, macros, and mechanics so you can focus on playing. My GM style is whimsical and story-focused, with a mix of fun, tension, and surprises. I like to keep the game flexible—embracing the Rule of Cool while making sure the story and mechanics make sense. Expect some humor, memorable NPCs, and a light touch of flair to bring the world to life.

Homebrew rules

I primarily stick to rules as written for consistency and clarity, but I’m open to small, story-driven homebrew tweaks if they make the game more fun or cinematic. Any changes will be discussed with the table so everyone knows what to expect.

Safety

How Johnathan Marrero creates a safe table

Player comfort is important to me, so we’ll cover safety during Session 0, including a discussion of Lines and Veils to set boundaries and expectations. I’m happy to handle safety tools digitally through Discord or messages, and I check in with players after intense sessions to make sure everyone feels okay. The goal is a fun, engaging game where everyone feels respected and comfortable sharing the table.
