About the adventure

Step into Ivalice, where every oath is a weapon and every choice cuts deep. This is a faithful Dungeons & Dragons 5E conversion of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions—a tale of shifting loyalties, hidden truths, and battles that shape the fate of kingdoms. At the heart of the campaign lies a unique character system. Each player begins with a special background drawn from one of eight archetypes: the Heir(Ramza), the Chosen(Alma), the Lion’s Blade(Agrias), the Engineer(Mustaardio), the Penitent(Meliadoul), the Twin Mystics(Rafa/Malak), the Dragoon(Beowulf), or the Soldier’s Path(3 interchangable characters). These backgrounds grant not just skills and features, but perspective: your character carries echoes of a destiny written once before. Yet destiny is never fixed. Events will not unfold exactly as they did on the CRT screens of old. Choices made at your table can alter alliances, spare lives once lost, or bring ruin where history once promised salvation. In a reimagining of the world of Ivalice where the catastrophes spared the varied peoples of Final Fantasy lore. Small villages of Moogles, Viera, and Bangaa still wander the land, carrying their own histories into the struggle. Elves, dwarves, and tieflings stand among the Lions’ War, embodying the social rifts and prejudices that echo the game’s themes. Beyond battle, life in Ivalice offers its own rewards. Downtime takes the form of unique jobs: one hero may craft rare gear or retrain, while another runs errands for tavern keepers scattered across the land. These jobs provide gold, connections, and story hooks, reinforcing the sense of a living world. Magical items reach beyond the familiar catalog—specialized arms and equipment emulate the exotic jobs of the original game, offering new ways to fight, defend, and inspire. Heroes may attune to up to five such items, reflecting the breadth of tactics and equipment the world of Ivalice demands. This campaign honors the spirit of Final Fantasy Tactics while embracing the flexibility of tabletop roleplay. The war between crowns and church will rage as before, but it is your story. Your heroes will decide who survives it, and what legacy remains when the Lions’ War is done.

About me

Hi! I am GM Dargov, also known as Rob. Like a lot of GMs on the site, I have had an enormous passion for role-playing games and D&D in particular for... a very long time! My first experience of D&D was picking up the Rules Cyclopedia in a small bookstore in rural Canada- I don't even know what edition that was! As a GM, I run my game very much straight down the middle. They remain challenging without become too deadly, and while my rule calling is fairly generous, this applies to both players and monsters. I allow a free feat at character creation of 5e and use free archetype in Pathfinder 2e. This gives me the freedom to run some extra "deadly" battles, but gives the players that little bit of extra omph. I am very hot on game balance- on my Discord server you'll find a few tweaks to classes and subclasses that I feel slipped through the net, such as Twlight Clerics, Moon Druids(early game) and Echo Knights. I am venturing into the world of publishing my own adventures, and my Monday night game is the playtest for my soon to be released adventure module, Wrath of the Elements! I have been GMing on SPG for over 4 years! That's a lot of dice rolls!

Character creation

Creating your character

At level one using mostly standard D&D rules on D and D Beyond using the 2024 rules. I have added a number of feats to emulate the Jobs not present within D&D (Chemist, Squire, Time Mage, Mystic, Summoner, Mystic, Ninja), and players will be able to pickup equipment that helps them mirror Samurai and Dragoons. Players start with 32 Character points for ability scores, and can purchase a 16 for 12 points. Extra feats will be awarded at character level 6 and 12 so that players can better emmulate the job system with it feeling like a feat tax. You will start as level 1 cadets, shortly due to graduate to level 2! I will hold a Session 0, you may turn up either with a character, create one on the day or after you have heard about the characters other people wish to play.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be playing in Foundry VTT on the Forge. To prepare, players should: Create a free Forge account to access the VTT. Join my Discord server, where we handle scheduling and discussion. Create a character on D&D Beyond. You’ll need a free account, and you’ll be invited to join my campaign to access my shared books.

What Robert brings to the table

I provide a large library of maps, music, and tokens for players to enjoy. Maps are designed with verticality in mind, emphasizing tactical positioning. I sometimes use character voices, though not always, as I need to be careful with my voice. The campaign’s focus will be on a blend of tactical combat and political intrigue, with roleplay and strategy shaping the course of the story. The tone will shift depending on which version of Ivalice the group chooses: a grittier, more grounded style if we play humans only; more fantastical—and occasionally lighthearted—if we include the wider Final Fantasy races such as Moogles.

Homebrew rules

I am allowing up to 5 attuned items in this campaign- however this are slot limited! Ie 2 hands, 1 head/back item, 1 armor, 1 accessory. I allows use of custom Backgrounds. ie. ability scores and feats not tied to backgrounds. I am creating a whole catalog of new magic items and gear for the game! There will be special downtime rules to allow players to craft items and run errands. I allow use of some 2014 versions of spells (ie sleep) I allow use of some 2014 subclasses. I allow players with poisoned resistance to make a saving throw against poison whenever it is applied, even if th effect applies automatically. I rein in the power of abusable spells and abilties (eg. The spirit Guardians lawnmower). I allow ambushing players characters (or monsters) to consider their initiative check a natural 20- all but guaranteeing first turn in initiative.

Safety

How Robert creates a safe table

I discuss likely themes and trigger during session 0 and set ground rules of mutual respect and conduct. Players are free to take a break when they need to, and Foundry messages are set to pan my screen to the person speaking, so display X N O's there. I am always happy to discuss anything (voice or text) that made people uncomfortable and shift the games tone and contect in response.
