About the adventure

This is a short-to-medium length adventure that I wrote to introduce some friends of mine to D&D. It takes place in the homebrew setting of Eastmark, which exists in Faerûn (Forgotten Realms). It is the eve of the wedding of the Princess of Clan Odogrumn to the Prince of Clan Tombdeep, a marriage which is due to unite the two dwarven kingdoms of Valkairn. All has been made ready in Citadel Aldabar, but alas, sabotage! The supply of holy water (AKA beer) kept by the church of Moradin has been emptied, and without it the ceremony cannot proceed. It is too short notice for more to be made by the priests, and the King is concerned that Moradin may be expressing displeasure toward the wedding. There is but one ray of hope; a recipe for a type of dwarven holy water which may be brewed in a matter of minutes by a skilled priest, and whose ingredients can be found within the borders of Valkairn. Guards are sent out to find a party of adventurers to procure the barley and hops to make the fabled holy water known as Moradin’s Gold. If you accept this quest, you will have 24 hours to complete it. The rewards will be great if you are successful, but failure could be catastrophic for the country of Valkairn.

About me

Hi! My name is Jay. I've been playing TTRPGs (primarily D&D) since around 2005 and have been GMing nearly as long. I have several multi-year campaigns under my belt, as well as a generous collection of digital maps and assets. I also collect dragon miniatures, most of which have seen combat at my table! My storytelling style is cinematic and character-driven. I like to create narrative moments that draw on PC backstories and world lore for deep, meaningful interactions. I want to give my players experiences that they can't help but annoy their non-gamer friends with. My table is a safe, inclusive space. Everyone is welcome no matter their roots, culture, religion, creed, orientation, gender identity, or politics. The caveat to that is that I will not allow insensitive or bigoted behaviour of any kind. I provide a form to all new players on which they can mark particular subject matters that they would prefer to avoid. If you'd like to request a particular kind of game at my table, please fill out my New Campaign Form: https://tinyurl.com/3wr5p7yz May the dice gods be with you! -J

Character creation

Creating your character

Attribute scores must be rolled inside the Roll20 campaign for transparency. Rolling method is 4d6 minus lowest. You may roll as many as three sets of six numbers and pick one set to use. Alternatively, you can use the standard array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8. Characters will start at level one (1). All races and classes from official sourcebooks and supplements are available to use. Characters will be subject to my approval before session one.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account and a Roll20 account. Links for the respective servers will be provided to new players after signup.

What Jay brings to the table

I like to use atmospheric music and character voices, including voice modifications on occasion. I have a large collection of battle maps to use, and I can also make custom maps for unique scenarios. I also have a large collection of tokens and a subscription for Heroforge for character art. I generally honour RAW, but I am open to suggestions from my players. I never knowingly use AI-generated content of any kind.

Homebrew rules

At character creation, writing a background story of at least one paragraph earns you a feat! Healing potions can be consumed using either an action or a bonus action. On a bonus action, roll for the amount healed. On an action, take the full amount (no roll necessary). At the end of every session, the players can vote for their favourite moment as Play of the Game. Whichever character was responsible for that moment gets an inspiration point. If that character already has inspiration, the player may give the inspiration point to another character. In order to give aid to another PC on a skill check, you must be proficient in that skill. When a character is confirmed to be about to die, they immediately get a Heroic Turn, during which they have access to all their abilities and spells regardless of spent resources (ie; spell slots). On a Heroic Turn, the character has one last opportunity to do something epic. As soon as the Heroic Turn is over, the character dies.

Safety

How Jay creates a safe table

A form will be provided upon application. You can use it to inform me about your preferences for difficulty, combat and tactics, puzzles and riddles, roleplay and lore, and potential romances. In addition, there is a section where applicants can mark potential triggers or subjects that they wish to avoid. This information goes only to me and will not be shared with other players. Session zero will be used for character building and setting expectations for the campaign, including establishing boundaries on things like potential triggers, PVP, and etiquette.
