About the adventure

Phandalin was meant to be a place of fresh starts—a quiet frontier town where fortunes are made and legends are born. But something is wrong. Whispers travel faster than the wind, familiar faces act strangely, and an ancient power long buried beneath the earth is beginning to stir. Whatever sleeps below is no longer content to remain hidden. In this ongoing campaign set in Faerûn’s Sword Coast, you’ll step into a living world shaped by your choices. Your characters will explore dangerous ruins, negotiate with uneasy allies, confront rising threats, and uncover secrets that tie the fate of Phandalin to something far older and far more dangerous than anyone suspects. The story blends heroic high fantasy with a creeping sense of mystery and corruption, slowly revealing what lies beneath the surface—and what it wants. This adventure is designed to welcome new players and veterans alike. Whether you’re experiencing Dungeons & Dragons for the first time or returning for a rich, narrative-driven campaign, you’ll find space to play the way you enjoy most—through roleplay, tactical combat, investigation, or character-driven storytelling. Roleplaying and voice acting are encouraged but never required; you’re invited to engage at whatever level feels right for you. Sessions are run with cinematic music, atmospheric soundscapes, and fully voiced NPCs, creating an immersive experience that feels closer to a fantasy series than a simple game night. Your character’s story matters here, and the choices you make will echo through the world. Sharpen your blade. Prepare your spells. The darkness is rising—and Phandalin needs heroes willing to fight back.

About me

✨ About Me I’ve been a Dungeon Master for over a decade, primarily using the 2014 D&D 5e ruleset—and slowly moving into the 2024 edition with excitement for the new material. I’ve had the privilege of professionally DMing with RPG Tabletop In A Castle, where I ran a fully condensed Out of the Abyss campaign across 25 hours of gameplay. I’ll be returning this January to run Ghosts of Saltmarsh with the same amazing team. I am also a composer of virtual fantasy soundtracks with Wayfarer Records.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players should create their level one characters and a brief backstory beforehand and submit them for approval. We’ll be using the 2014 5e ruleset, including all options up through Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. If you’d like to use material outside of these sources, feel free to ask—I’m happy to discuss it. Please have your character ready 2 days before game start. I also recommend creating a backup character, just in case your hero meets an unfortunate end or you discover you’d prefer to switch to a different playstyle later in the campaign.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be using Fantasy Grounds Unity for gameplay and Discord for voice and video. To begin, please download Fantasy Grounds Unity to your computer. All licenses are now free, so you won’t need to purchase anything. I own the rulebooks and modules, and they will automatically be shared with you when you join my server. I recommend building your character on D&D Beyond first—I can import it directly into Fantasy Grounds. If you prefer, I can also enter it manually. Please submit your full character sheet, backstory, and profile picture at least three days before the game. Once you have a a character make sure it is public then share the link with me so I can review and import into FG. If you’re new to Fantasy Grounds, take a little time to familiarize yourself with the interface. Don’t worry if it feels overwhelming—I’m happy to guide you, and we can always run things as if we were at a physical table while we get you set up. Discord will be used for voice . Video is encouraged (but not required) if you’re comfortable. You’ll receive an invite to my game server before the session—I’d love to see everyone’s faces! You will need Chrome or Firefox to run the playback of Syrinscape that is used for cinematic music and soundscapes.

What Chris Caouette brings to the table

I bring the world to life with fully voiced NPCs, cinematic music, and immersive sound effects. The game is primarily Rules As Written, but never at the expense of a cool idea or an exciting narrative moment. Our sessions will use a well-prepared Fantasy Grounds setup, blending automation with a few manual adjustments where needed. For example, I work to weave each player’s backstory into the unfolding plot, adding personal stakes, surprises, and memorable moments throughout the campaign. Above all, I provide a safe, inclusive, and fun environment where everyone can relax, explore, and enjoy the story—and my goal is to make this the highlight of your week!

Homebrew rules

NAT 20 Critical Hits - Instead of Rolling and doubling damage, You roll once and add that to what would have been the Maximum Damage. For example, you hit with a sword that does 1d6+2 damage, you would add 8+Your Roll. Flanking: This is partially built into Fantasy Grounds but requires you to hit the button. 1 Flank = +2 to hit. 2 or more flanking = +5 to hit.

Safety

How Chris Caouette creates a safe table

Before our Session 0, I will send out a survey to gather your Lines and Veils, along with my own predetermined boundaries. During play, we will also use X, N, and O safety tools, which you may activate at any time through a private Discord message or directly in the Fantasy Grounds chat. If any card is used, I will immediately pause the game, adjust the content, and take whatever steps are needed to ensure that you feel safe, respected, and comfortable throughout the entire adventure.
