Summer Camp Search Party

Camp Paw-Paw Lake for Young Adventurers is a pretty cushy summer job. Paw-Paw Lake is steeped in legend, but those are just campfire stories, right?

About the adventure

What better way to cap off your summer than a summer-camp-themed folk-horror one shot? "What should have been a normal day as a counselor at Camp Paw-Paw Lake for Young Adventures is now setting up to be anything but. Signing up to spend 10 weeks of your summer deep in the woods, a minimum 45-minute drive to anywhere with cellphone service, surrounded by rowdy children doing average summer camp activities while ALSO learning everything from combat to simple cantrips and spells, is absolutely not for the faint of heart. But even the most enthusiastic, friendly counselors would sooner scrub toilets than deal with the crop of kids you were handed. You've nearly made it through the summer, but now your kids have sent you on a chase through the woods that no campers or counselors have traveled in generations." Join me and your fellow players in an expedition through the woods surrounding Camp Paw-Paw Lake! Get ready to experience combat trials surrounded by spooky vibes and intrigue as you search for lost campers and find out whether the stories told at Camp Paw-Paw Lake really are just stories... Or are they? If you like summer camp nostalgia; myths, legends, and folklore; combat, intrigue, or all of the above, join me for an adventure at Camp Paw Paw Lake! Expect a lot of folk horror, wrapped in "Friday the 13th", and a sprinkle of "Cabin in the Woods"! Because we'll be playing as level 13 players for the day and hope to get through a lot of combat and mystery solving, I would recommend this specific adventure for players with at least a few games worth of experience under their belt.

About me

Hi, I'm Maddie, your resident spooky-goth-GM! I've been playing TTRPGs for a number of years now, starting off with D&D 4e, then moving up and now running 5e as well as the new 2024/2025 rules. In that time I've also branched out into other systems, one of my standout favorites being Blades in the Dark! I have a lifetime of experience with acting and improv, even currently working with an improv and sketch group, performing standup comedy, and am working on a degree in creative writing and film. These aspects really inform the way I GM, helping me find joy and fulfillment in giving my players things like mentally challenging puzzles and combat encounters while also bringing professional roleplay experience! I totally understand that TTRPGs can feel intimidating and inaccessible for new players, even with all the D&D media that has become so prevalent lately! I actually thoroughly enjoy getting to curate fun and engaging experiences for new players and help guide them through their first times playing! Whether you're a brand new player or an experienced one looking for more game time, let's play!

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll be showing up to the session with your level 13 character sheets ready to play, however once you're signed up I am absolutely open to communicating via DM if you want any specific guidance for character creation. As for determining stats, I have two things to go by: 1. Normally I would say hit dice are maxed, however for this endeavor I'll be asking you to roll for your HP. 2. For your other 6 stats, roll 4d6 and drop the lowest, and do this 7 times. From those you can choose 6 to be your ability scores as you choose. You don't necessarily have to keep the 6 highest out of those 7 as I know some players really enjoy having a "dump stat". But out of those numbers choose which you want to keep and where to put them based on your class. 3. As we'll be playing level 13 characters, and among those lower levels are points where you would have been given the option for an ASI or feat, you are free to incorporate those into your build as well. I'll be getting creative in building this game, so I want this to be THE place for you to get creative in both character creation and aesthetic! That being said, just so we have boundaries in place I'll be limiting source material to these: - The Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook (the 2024 edition has much more things to choose from, however if you would like to use the 5th edition you are more than free to) - "Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse" - "Mythic Odysseys of Theros" - "Xanathar's Guide to Everything" Some other homebrewed races from around the internet I'd be open to in keeping with the setting: - https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-N4JNbXT_vkJWQWxRsYx - https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-LqDTVTLJw5ACJ9mOGor - https://www.reddit.com/r/UnearthedArcana/comments/moac3u/comment/gu2hjhr/ And as for personality/backstories, all I request is a party of camp counselors. But your feelings towards the job and the kids, how long you've been doing this (is this your first year or your fifteenth?), why you sign up for this 10-week camp every summer, all of that is up to you! I'll be providing more information on the camp itself in the Roll20 game page

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We'll be playing on Roll20 as well as having some pre-game discussions on the game page there, so players will need a Roll20 account to participate.

What Maddie brings to the table

I'm a storyteller first and foremost! That aspect becomes incorporated into every game I run. I'll bring the voices, ambient music, background noises and images, and even homebrewed monsters and magic items to really make you feel like you've been sitting around the fire at summer camp! Yes, you heard that right! I'm super excited to be developing a list of an assortment of magic items, clothing, and more to fit within the "summer camp" theme. As part of the discussion forums on Roll20 I'll be providing a list of some of the ones I'll be offering as options to incorporate into starting equipment, but will also be prompting y'all to roll for them as well as awarding more as the day goes on. On that note, I'm a firm follower of the Rule of Cool. All I ask is that you not take advantage of this and exercise your best judgement in character creation and gameplay. Customization and getting creative with character with building can be half the fun, but I trust you to be able to judge when you're building something objectively busted. Remember, there's a big difference between taking creative liberties and breaking the game. Additionally, since this will be a longer session, we'll be taking at least one 15-20 minute break during the session.

Homebrew rules

Magic items automatically attune in my games, drinking a potion as a bonus action, a spell and a cantrip can be cast in the same turn as long as one can be used as a bonus action (but not two spells in the same turn)

Safety

How Maddie creates a safe table

In the discussion forum on the game page on Roll20 I'll be posting a Google form where you can submit your lines and veils, as well as any other notes to me. I'll then compile all the responses into one general document for everyone to access so we are all aware of boundaries and expectations. I'll also be making use of another safety tool format, a "Want/Will/Won't" list, which will also be a Google form link for you to fill out and for me to then compile into a shared document for everyone to see and acknowledge before game day. X, N, and Os can be messaged, however if it is something that needs an immediate response to take a "time out" (no matter the reason), I allow players to hold up a "white flag" (a white piece of paper, for example) on video. We will also take at least one 15-20 minute long break at some point during the session.
