About the adventure

In this "classic fantasy" setting our party will find themselves attending a festival in the city of Ardenton, where tensions are on the rise as the local lord, Silas Fairwind, rules with cruelty and an iron fist. Among the merriment of the festival there are hushed conversations in the corners of taverns and the back rooms of homes, growing whispers of people who desperately want liberation and justice but lack the strength and unity to make it happen. It will be up to our adventurers to collaborate and decide what to do in this endeavor. Do you help the people of the city stand up to their oppressors? Why or why not? If you help, how do you go about enacting change? Direct action? Becoming a leader yourself? Uniting the citizens, and through what? Scheming and fun hijinks? The choices here are virtually endless! This is your chance to get creative as well as explore these subjects yourself, making your own choices and exploring the world. This game is dubbed a "mini campaign" as I only plan for it to be about 3 sessions, however if players need to go a session or 2 beyond that that is an option. Additionally I want this to be an opportunity for young people to learn to play D&D and have fun! Don't let the subject matter fool you, I sincerely hope players in this campaign will be able to have fun in all aspects, even the in-game planning and discourse. In order to make this even more friendly to especially beginning players, your registration covers the cost of a "DM Office Hours" session on Google Meets before our first session where I can help and walk you through building a character and share the resources I have on hand (since I know there's a lot to wade through and some language that may be difficult to understand), answer any questions you may have about the game (either this specific one or D&D in general), show you how to add your character to the Roll20 game and how to interact with the sheet there, etc. This is open to any players, whether this is your first time playing or 30th! I always recommend this for beginning players even if we're starting at level 1 but even more so as we're starting off with level 5. For players who want to start building at home this session can also be a great opportunity to get help on places you're stuck, ask for more resources to pull from, or audit your character sheet if you're concerned about the minutiae of it. I also have over 10 years of working with young adults as an educator in a myriad of settings, so I am very conscious of the needs for safety and privacy of especially young adults. For this reason, even though we will be playing on Roll20 and will be using microphones, players will not be using cameras. Additionally if it would help parents have some more peace of mind, I will be inviting both players and parents to be in the Discord that will exist during game prep/the game running.

About me

Hi, I'm Maddie, your resident spooky-goth-GM! I've been playing TTRPGs for a number of years now, starting off with D&D 4e, then moving up and now running 5e as well as the new 2024/2025 rules. In that time I've also branched out into other systems, one of my standout favorites being Blades in the Dark! I have a lifetime of experience with acting and improv, even currently working with an improv and sketch group, performing standup comedy, and am working on a degree in creative writing and film. These aspects really inform the way I GM, helping me find joy and fulfillment in giving my players things like mentally challenging puzzles and combat encounters while also bringing professional roleplay experience! I totally understand that TTRPGs can feel intimidating and inaccessible for new players, even with all the D&D media that has become so prevalent lately! I actually thoroughly enjoy getting to curate fun and engaging experiences for new players and help guide them through their first times playing! Whether you're a brand new player or an experienced one looking for more game time, let's play!

Character creation

Creating your character

The cost of your seat includes the opportunity for a "DM Office Hours" session on Google Meets with me to help build a character! Again, I highly recommend this especially for players that are new/still learning. If you have no idea where to start, in planning for this I always tell people to start thinking about a character they want to emulate. Do you want to play a character like Vi, Jace, or Mel from "Arcane"? Buffy from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"? Or maybe you've watched "Dimension 20" or "Critical Role" and have someone you'd like to emulate from there? If you would like to build a character at home (or at least start and then work more in an Office Hours session), the sources we'll be pulling from are the following (you can feel free to reach out to me and I can also provide you with any you may need): - The D&D Player's Handbook (primarily the 2024 version, however the 2014 version is also available for use) - Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - Xanathar's Guide to Everything - Monster's of the Multiverse - Mythic Odysseys of Theros Stats will be determined as follows: 1. Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest 2. Do this 7 times 3. Keep whichever 6 you would like and input them where you see fit

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I will be creating a Discord for this game that will be deleted once we have finished, just to make communication easier and more streamlined. Once we have enough players for the game to go ahead I will be sending out an invite to the Discord page. Both players and parents are welcome to join. I will also have a Roll20 game page set up and will send out that link as a part of your welcome message once you sign up.

What Maddie brings to the table

I am a professional writer and performer, so you can expect fun, imaginative characters, settings, and plots to engage with! I do unique character voices and have a lot of fun with it, as well as cater the way I engage in-game to the general vibe of the game. I utilize music and sound effects very heavily as well, and pride myself in creating unique backdrops on Roll20 to set the scene as well as setting up maps for exploration and combat encounters. I also pride myself in imaginative encounters that will challenge players' problem-solving and collaboration, while also responding to player's needs and wishes. Similarly, I spend a lot of free time coming up with homebrewed magic items, features, and more, and am always excited to share them with players!

Homebrew rules

- Drinking a potion does count as a bonus action in my games (however giving one to someone counts as a full action) - Flanking gives you advantage - Damage dice on critical hits are doubled - Spell scrolls are not limited to just your class's spell list/your level. I always interpret spell scrolls as a 1-time use spell at a specific level, so just a "I speak words and this happens" type of deal, and the words disappear and the scroll crumbles to dust - Similarly, unless a wand/staff/etc. has specific reasons for it to need to be used by a specific class or spellcaster, I believe it can be used by anyone. I just modify the rules to where a non-caster may be able to use it less often. - Spellcasters may cast 1 spell and 1 cantrip in the same turn, as long as one of them is a bonus action. Additionally, even if they want to cast something that is an innate ability, that still counts as a spell or cantrip, so it must be a bonus action as well.

How Maddie creates a safe table

I will be creating a Google Form for people to fill out their lines and veils as well as a form to fill out specific topics I find to be especially important. I will then compile that into a shared document for players to read and acknowledge and have them posted on Roll20 as well. I will also be keeping this game age-appropriate and will thusly have limits already imposed, such as limits on romance/types of relationships, things that happen in combat, etc. Our Roll20 game will have a Safety Deck with color-coded cards for players to throw out to let us know they need the conversation to end/redirect. Additionally, I will be sending out a form for players to fill out feedback after each session.
