About the adventure

Visit a Starbase in a distant part of the Federation. Far more powerful than any Starship in the Fleet! A way-station for travellers. Reinforcements for Federation worlds and allies. Home base and resupply port for explorers, diplomats and more. Starbase 185 is the most distant large-scale Federation outpost. The closest to Borg space, it was refit for a war that never came (the Borg ignored '185' every incursion, heading directly to the heart of Federation space before attacking). Several thousand Starfleet citizens and friendly aliens call '185' home. So do criminals. So do spies. So do dreamers. So do explorers. You never can tell what will happen, and when danger strikes, there's nowhere to warp to, nowhere to retreat. '185' is on the front lines of a weird and wonderful universe. Do you have what it takes to serve here? You can sign up for a one-shot adventure on the starbase, whwew each session can be enjoyed on their own, OR visit the 'campaign' page to sign up for a serialized, 'season' of adventure. Like a great episode of 'Star Trek' we will mix humor, thrills, character growth and action. You can also join Starbase 185 for an entire campaign (check the 'campaign' page of this website for more info). Campaign art provided by Modiphius Entertainment. Used with permission.

About me

Stories are my passion. I'm a writer, podcaster and voice actor but most of all I am a storyteller who values unique, immersive journeys. My goal is to create a comfortable, safe environment for players/characters to have fun exploring. Each session will be role-play heavy and rules-light, with a collaborative story giving every player a chance to shine. I will create our adventure from scratch to surprise, engage and leave you eager for the next session. If you're just starting out with RPG's or Star Trek Adventures I'll help you create the character, understand the basics and jump right in! I got my first D&D manual when I was nine, but I took a long break. Later I became a professional actor and Improv performer, then a narrator and producer of podcasts and audio-books. A friend re-introduced me to D&D during COVID, which reignited the passion to play. In turn, playing inspired me to run games for others.

Character creation

Creating your character

Your 'crew' will decide on the characters, starbase and mission parameters during a paid 'Session 0'. We will be using BC Holme's excellent Star Trek Adventures character generator (practice by building characters: it's a lot of fun and a grat way to become familiar with character creation): https://sta.bcholmes.org/ 'Star Trek Adventures' also encourages the creation of 'secondary' characters of other ranks/ages. This lets you players get involved in different kinds of scenes, ranks or in different departments.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Find yourself a comfortable, quiet place to be your best Starfleet Officer :) Before your first session you and the GM will discuss system rules, character goals, back-story, player preferences and consent. ALL sessions will have a three hour hard limit. You will need: 🖖 A quiet place to play ✨ Reliable internet connection 🖖 Discord account ✨ Reliable microphone 🖖 Headphones recommended (avoids echoes)

What JohnRunsGames brings to the table

I will provide: 🖖 A Discord server for our game ✨ A unique cast of NPC characters 🖖 STA 2E Core Book data ✨ Get up to speed on the rules Join us in an immersive, team-based role-playing adventure! The most important skills in this game will be improvisation and communication. Pack your imagination, creativity, team spirit and enjoyment of role-playing and beam aboard! Campaign sessions will be held over Discord audio/text channels (free account required). I will provide online dice rolling, images, maps, grids and other resources to help you keep track of the action, build your characters, ship and adventure. Sessions will ALWAYS have a three hour hard limit. See you in the Final Frontier!

Homebrew rules

People lead busy lives, so I cap my game sessions at three hours. Sometimes, that means abridging the rules for time. When in doubt we follow the Star Trek Adventures Second Edition rules, though we may combine or skip steps where it makes sense for players to have a good time, and finish on time. Longer elements of play (ie: extended tasks, stress/shield tracks and combat turns) may be shortened or simplified to encourage player interactions and create more exciting sessions, while staying under the 3 hour limit. Any homebrew rules or changes from 'Rules as Written' (RAW): ✨ Put Player-choices first, rewards good ideas 🖖 Keep games under 3 hours ✨ Are explained compared to RAW 🖖 Always logical & consistently applied ✨ Based on 'Star Trek' values & 'Rule of Cool'
