About the adventure
In the land of Faerûn, the heartland known as the Dalelands is a beautiful region of shady forests and rolling farmlands. But this quiet-looking region is anything but. Every inn has a retired adventurer with a lifetime of stories to share, and every hillside or wooded grove could be hiding dangers and treasures. Outside of the small crossroads village of Shadowdale Town stands an abandoned castle. Once the home of a powerful wizard, it is now haunted by the undead minions of an ogre warlord. The nervous residents of Shadowdale Town have grown fearful after hearing of the disappearance of a nearby family. Noblewoman Khara Sulwood has sent messengers out into the Dalelands region to ask for help putting the spirit of the ogre warlord back to rest... This combat-heavy one-shot is a classic dungeon delve in the world of Faerûn. Whether you're new to Dungeons and Dragons or a returning adventurer, this delve will challenge your sword or spellbook and, if you're successful, label you as heroes to the locals of Shadowdale!

About me
Hello Adventurers! I'm a Paladin without a Cause, but you can also call me Andrew. I've been into TTRPGs for most of my adult life, starting with Pathfinder and D&D 3.5 and now D&D 5.5e. What I love most about TTRPGs is how unpredictable it can be. The critical moments hanging on the outcome of a die roll, the out-of-the-box solutions (and the contrasting spending 30 minutes to open a door), and the spontaneous roleplaying that arises when you throw a handful of passionate players into fantastical stories. I love world-building and get inspiration from all sorts of sources, whether from existing settings and their lore, or homebrewed magic items, or compelling player backstories. When running homebrewed campaigns, I will always try to work player backstories into the overall story we're telling at the table. I usually only have a fuzzy idea of the story and have no problem (and typically am delighted to) reworking what I have planned to incorporate the players' effect on the world.
View Profile →Character creation
Creating your character
Characters can be created using content from the D&D 5.5e (2024) Player's Handbook and/or the Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn books. Ability scores are to be set using Standard Array or Point Buy, using the method outlined in the Player's Handbook. Character creation should happen before our session begins. I can assist with character creation through direct messaging or in Discord voice chat. We'll be starting at level 3. Standard equipment only, no magic items.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
A Discord account is required to join the Discord server, and you'll need a microphone and preferably headphones. Our Virtual TableTop (VTT) is Shard Tabletop. It's entirely browser based, no app or program downloading required. An account with Shard is required, and I'll be providing the link to join the campaign in Discord.
What Andrew brings to the table
I have books, maps, and tokens for use with Shard Tabletop. I also have a large selection of physical books for D&D 5e and 5.5e, and can create missing species/subclasses in Shard as needed. I typically try to do NPC-specific voices, and use descriptive language for both settings and in combat. I like to reward creative and out-of-the-box thinking, while still remaining true to the Rules as Written. If it's mechanically possible, go for it!
Homebrew rules
We'll be using D&D 5.5e (2024) rules unless otherwise specified. Legendary Moments: When a Player rolls two D20s for one Action (skill check, attack, or otherwise), and both D20s roll natural 20s, the character will get a Legendary Moment, which grants a permanent boost to their character relevant to the situation. Guaranteed Health: If a 1 is rolled on a Hit Dice during level up, you may reroll the result. Attunement: In order to attune to a magical item that requires attunement, a Player must solve a puzzle during a Long Rest (during which no other activities other than sleeping may occur). The puzzle will be relevant to the magical item and/or its ability. Non-Lethal Damage: Players may choose to make any weapon attack or one-target spell non-lethal before rolling damage. If the target reaches 0 Hit Points this way, they will be knocked Unconscious instead of killed. Equipment: Players will need to track equipment weight and be aware of overencumberance and its effects. Currency will not apply to the carried weight. Ranged ammunition will need to be tracked and refilled as needed, as well as daily rations. Spell components without a cost are assumed to be included in a component pouch and refilled (for free) whenever the Players stop at a town. Spell components with a listed cost will need to be purchased separately, and are consumed when used.

Safety
How Andrew creates a safe table
We will cover use of the X, N, and O emojis used in Shard and how they can be used during play. Players can also direct message me to indicate their Lines and/or Veils, as well as anything they would like to see in the game. At least one break will be taken during each session, and players are always welcome to take additional breaks as needed (while being mindful of the impact to the rest of the table). And my direct messages are always open to discuss any issues related to the game.
